Vital communication tool given to Wanaka LandSAR

TONY O’REGAN

Rotary Club of Wanaka president George Scott presents the repeater to LandSAR fundraiser Phil Melchior.

Wanaka LandSAR has taken charge of a new communications repeater funded by the Rotary Club of Wanaka.

The repeater cost $3500 and will enable LandSAR to extend its communication capabilities when on missions.

“Communications are vital and this will help with one of our biggest problems,” LANDSAR fundraising spokesperson Phil Melchior said.

The repeater is mobile and can be anchored atop a mountain, receiving the signal from the main repeater on Roys Peak and extending it into the valleys where it is located.

Wanaka Rotary Club president George Scott said the club visited LandSAR last year and heard about the need for the equipment.

“It seemed like a no-brainer,” said George. “We all live here and like to play here, and the repeater will really help when search and rescue is needed.”

Wanaka LANDSAR receives approximately 50 call outs each year and is serviced by a team of volunteers which relies on community funding to operate.

The Rotary Club of Wanaka raises funds through volunteering activities which include the annual Book Sale, Duck Race, and working at the A&P Show and Warbirds Over Wanaka George said.

Rotary and Sassy Pants make a difference in the Pacific

Sassy Pants owner Deborah Budden will donate her residual stock to women in need in the Pacific Islands.

After 14 years in the retail lingerie business, Deborah Budden has decided to close the doors at Sassy Pants with an altruistic farewell.

A holiday to the Yasawa Islands in Fiji last November gave Deborah the clear headspace which helped her decide to close her business down after not attracting a buyer for over a year.

“It has been great supporting the women of Wanaka but it’s time to move on, and the prospect of having a garage full of residual stock was daunting,” Deborah said.

While she was in Fiji, Deborah attended a Rugby Sevens tournament. “Alongside the Sevens, there was a parallel netball tournament, and I was shocked to see breastfeeding mothers running around the court with no bras,” Deborah said. “The more places I went, the more I saw a need for undergarments for the women in the villages.”

This sparked an idea - to donate Sassy Pants’ residual stock to people in need.

She put some feelers out among the Rotary network - Deborah is a keen Rotarian herself - and decided to donate all suitable bras and underwear leftover after her closing sale to Rotary New Zealand World Community Service (RNZWCS).

“International community service sometimes brings rotary clubs from two or more countries together to serve one of their communities through a particular project,” RNZWCS says on its website. “It’s true teamwork as there are always a number of other parties involved – local people in the project itself, governments, local authorities, and other partner NGOs.”

RNZWCS assists in the selection, scoping, management and funding of international projects, encourages Kiwis to participate in project activities, and liaises with relevant stakeholders.

“Our last container went to Fiji containing clothing, books, desks and chairs for schools and hospital equipment,” RNZWCS executive director Stuart Batty said.

“We only send goods as they are needed and we are in discussions with Fiji, Samoa and Tonga to determine that. The bras and underwear will be used in disaster relief projects and distributed to women’s crisis centres and midwives.”

Deborah said she was thrilled her stock would be going to help the women in the Pacific Islands.

“In the aftermath of a humanitarian crisis, food, clean water and sanitation, shelter and critical health services are rightly assigned priority,” she said. “Often things people find embarrassing to bring up or are taboo in some societies are low down the list, and it's usually women who are left to suffer.”

Tuesday 5 February 2019

What a great evening of Rotary last week with very good attendance. We seem to have an increasing number coming to the drinks and social time from 5.00pm. The presentation from Jane Guy on Jig saw was interesting and great to hear that they have just purchased a car with the funds we gave them earlier in this Rotary year.

I meet with Bridget the Manager of the Wanaka District Club during the week and they are very pleased with how everything is going for them with Rotary meeting there. They are still working on getting the quantities of food right and are sorry that some people missed out on some items last week. I understand they are moving to smaller plates which will help. A number of members have noticed that some people are filling their plates up with excessive amounts of food with no regard for those coming later. Please be reasonable with the amount of food you take and if you are still hungry go back and have seconds.

Over 20 Rotarians have joined the District Club to date and they are very pleased with that. If you would still like to join and I do encourage you to join, ask at the bar or me for an application form to fill out.

At Directors meeting last Wednesday there was continued discussion about the Apology system. The majority feel it is working very well. Where we are having problems is in people not putting in an apology. This is not fair on the Wanaka District Club. Please see below the outcome of these discussions.

Please see the donation to LandSAR below. This came about because of our visit to their headquarters late last year.

Upcoming events.

The 4WD trip on the 30th March filled up very quickly and I am looking forward to that.

Our meeting on the 9th April has been changed to the 10th April. Derek Howarth is organising for the Old Bangers drivers and crew to join us on that night. A night not to be missed. More info coming from Derek soon.

The Tasmanian Personal Development team will be with us from the 23rd / 26th April and Karl and I have worked on a plan for the time they will be with us.

Karl is still looking for a couple more host families.

Richard will soon be asking for your support with catering at the farmlands tent at the Wanaka Show. We have lost a number of our catering fundraisers to the new club. To be able to continue with our present level of support to the community we need to find some new fundraising events. If you have an ideas please let me or one of the directors know

Rosie and I are working on a couple of Rotary nights away from the District club, so let’s hope everything falls into place. If you do know of a good speaker please let Rosie know.

Look forward to seeing you all next meeting

President George

Apology System

For some time the Club has been having problems with people failing to register an apology for our weekly meetings. The Directors have had numerous discussions about this and have talked about ways to improve the situation.

A new system for registering apologies was introduced at the beginning of this Rotary Year by Fran. This system works very well and allows you to register an apology for one or multiple nights easily and also to register that you may be bringing a guest or partner along. It can easily be done on a computer or a mobile device.

While our previous venue had a number of problems towards the end, one of them was our inaccurate numbers of members attending our weekly meetings.

We have a new venue at the Wanaka District Club and we want to have a good relationship with them. We must get our numbers attending correct !!

The Wanaka District Club buys the food for our meals based on the number of members who have indicated they will be attending. So if you have not registered an apology, food has been bought for your meal.

One night in January we had 8 people who failed to put in an apology. This meant the Wanaka District Club were short of $160 in meal receipts for the night. We cannot allow this to continue.

Important.

From the 19th February the Wanaka Rotary club will be sent an invoice from the Wanaka District Club for any shortfall in meal numbers.

From the 19th February if you do not register an apology by 5.00pm on Monday night and then fail to attend you will be sent an account for $20 from the Wanaka Rotary Club.

This will apply to everyone with no exceptions

Please register your apology early, do not leave it to the last minute

If you do still have problems with the meal apology system please contact me and we will see what is happening. If for some reason you cannot connect to the internet you can phone me and I will register an apology for you.

Administration: Peter Harridge

No Report, meeting of the Committee is to be held next week.

Foundation: Deans Hudson

No Report

Fundraising: Richard Wallace

Main Points

> A&P Show Catering. 8th & 9th March. Required to man Farmlands Tent.

> Challenge Wanaka. We are not required. Richard Wallace advised that this was a much reduced activity and that Aspiring Rotary is catering for this

Cavalcade. We are not required

Peter Harridge voiced concern regarding the Foundation finances and the ability to fund future donation requests. This concern arises from some Fund Raising activities, that have been part of the Club’s Foundation income stream, have been lost to the new Wanaka based Rotary Club.

Discussion ensued and Directors agreed with the sentiment. New income stream activities need to be identified.

Service Projects: John Huddleston

Reviewed a request from Relay for Life Wanaka asking for assistance to prepare and serve a breakfast for the morning of Sunday, 24 March.

The consensus view was the Club was already too committed with other events in March

Subsequently, on behalf of the Relay for Life organisers, I approached Aspiring Rotary and the Wanaka and Districts Lion Club asking if they would be interested in assisting but both these Clubs also had other commitments over this period.

Rotary Park, Glendhu Bay

Working Bee on Saturday, 24th November. Turnout very disappointing.

QLDC, after a lot of promoting particularly from George, finally just before Xmas mowed the long grass.

Councillor Quentin Smith with input from President George got the problem addressed

Have contacted Ian Haynes for an update on irrigation and the possibility/feasibility of a new electricity supply.

Option 1: Provide a transformer, cost prohibitive $25,000+

Option 2: Run a power line from the Camping Ground Toilet Block. The distance is considered to be too great

A discussion ensued and it was resolved to leave this issue for the time being

Directors were requested for funds for irrigating Rotary Park. $1000. This was supported

Youth and Vocation: Karl Buchanan

Main Points

* Press Release – We received some good feedback and interest, following along from Tony’s press release highlighting various Rotary youth opportunities. Had approx. 10 contacts from various ages – but mostly from school students and with most interest in Outward Bound.

Followed up with each individually and will contact again as opportunities arise. Thanks to Tony for putting together and organising.

* Rotary Study Exchange – Club is hosting incoming group from Tasmania, total of 6 people including the leader. Dates are Tuesday 23rd – Friday 26th of April, with the club expected to arrange transportation to Oamaru for the district conference. Note ANZAC day on the 25th and attending dawn service. Focus is on agriculture, tourism and engineering.

Need to organise:

o Programme of visits and events – all assistance, contacts and ideas welcome

o Accommodation with members for 3 nights

o Transport to Oamaru 26th April for conference

No outbound from Wanaka club on the reciprocal visit.

President George will approach Mark Orbell of Ridgeline to assist with RSE.

Agriculture and Tourism is their main interest.

ANZAC Day occurs during their visit

* JR McKenzie Trust Uniform Grant – Distributed to schools – outcomes aren’t made public.

* RYLA – Disappointingly received no notice of RYLA from the Oamaru club. We publicised this via Facebook and also mentioned to each contact from the press release, but received no applications or even interest.

Peter Harridge advised Directors that people need to be asked if they would like to attend RYLA for a successful event

* Speech Competition – Don has in hand and organising with MAC. Some interest from the press release, and date likely early/mid-March for club final.

Club Membership Deborah Budden

No Report

The Club has 65 Members at this time including Honorary Members. New Members are in the offing.

Club Activities Chris Wright

Main Points

* 2nd December

* Game of fun golf followed by meal. 60 odd turned up. Thanks for Director’s organising. Those that attended had a great time. Feedback from some anti golfers that it wasn’t inclusive and going to the meal meant listening to golf chat.

* 19th January

* Gibbston Valley Concert. Approximately 10 attended. Bus driven by John Milburn. Will continue this next year if John is happy to drive which I believe he is.

* 30th March

* 4x4 Rally. Ken Goldfinch organising for 30th March. Need to secure booking sooner rather than later. Danseys Pass Coach Inn can only accommodate

* 25th January. Friday social at Mike Elliot’s

* 1st March. Friday night social Bruce Stenson’s

* End of March / April. Friday night social Jarod Frazer’s new house.

* 28th September

* Port Chalmers Seafood festival.

Progressive dinner. Date to be confirmed. Pam Brown to organise.

General Business

* Bangers to Bluff: This a group running old cars to Bluff. Some are Rotarians. Rosie Burridge and Derek Howarth are organising

Club Meeting to be changed from Tue 9th April to Wed 10th April

* Crash Rescue: Directors resolved to donate $5000. Moved: Richard Wallace, Seconded: Peter Harridge

Chris wright is in contact with Jodie Rainsford regarding cooking.

* Heart Foundation: President George will put a note in the Bulletin

* Apology System; For some years now, Members overlook putting in an apology if not attending. This is simply a catering and cost matter in that a meal is provided but there is no payment.

Directors resolved that Members who failed to put in an apology will be invoiced by the Club. The Club will pay the caterer – in this case the Wanaka Club for the missing payment.

The Meeting closed at 9.40pm

Next Meeting 20th February 2019
