Club Membership Fees Due Now!

You will have all received an invoice for the Rotary Club of Wanaka membership fees which are due now. You will see there is a discount if paid before the 20th of September 2018.

Many clubs around New Zealand have set their subs within the $200 to $240 range so this Club is in line with that.

We pay the Rotary International affiliation fees as soon as the new year begins – 1 July 2018. This is based on the number of members at the 1st July 2017 and is for six months. The second 6 months is invoiced in January 2018. Rotary International get their data for the invoice from Club Runner and will pick up that our Club will have increased its membership over the next six months (assuming all our new members are signed in!).

A couple of years ago I did some pie charts to show the breakdown of where membership fees are allocated. I intend to update this and will put it in the Bulletin in due course. In brief the fees you pay go towards District affiliation, Rotary International affiliation, Rotary Down Under magazine and towards the Club running costs such as Club Runner/website management, the PO Box for Charitable Trust applications, speaker meal and thank you costs.

To make sure you get the discount on offer why not pay now or set up an advance payment in your banking system so you don’t miss out! From the Treasurer – Margaret West

Tititea Lodge Working Bee - Weekend 22/23rd September 2018

The Rotary Club of Wanaka has been asked to assist with some general maintenance tasks for the weekend of 22/23rd September 2018 at Tititea Lodge. For those members attending, all food and accommodation will be provided. Assuming that we have a favourable weather forecast, the intention is to all meet up in the Roys Bay Car Park (start of Waterfall Creek Track) at 9.00am on Saturday, 22 September. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for the journey via Wanaka - Mt Aspiring Road and Cameron Flat Road, with the intention to carpool.

After a good breakfast and a general tidy up on the Sunday, we should be back in Wanaka around 1pm.

For newer members, Tititea Lodge is located in the East Matukituki Valley on the edge of Mount Aspiring National Park. It is approximately a 48 km drive from Wanaka. Access is across a river, which is provided by a tractor and trailer. Travelling time is around 1 hour.

The Lodge hosts comprehensive senior outdoor education programmes for college students, which is administered by Dunstan High School and Mount Aspiring College.

Tititea Lodge was established in 1969 (almost 50 years ago) and was previously the homestead for the Aspinall family, the owners of Mt Aspiring Station. The original building dates back to the 1920s. Over the years various modifications and extensions have been made, and the lodge now has accommodation for 42 people.

See John Huddleston for any further information.

Tuesday 14 August 2018 - President George's Message:

Today I write from Melbourne where I am helping our son and his family move into a home they have just purchased in the Coburg suburb. They have lived in Melbourne for just over 3 year first as a student and now working for Charlton United Brewers. It is great for them to now have a big 920 sq. metre section for the boys to run around and enjoy.

A lot has happened in Rotary in Wanaka during the last week. It was a surprise to most of us see the words Aspiring Rotary. On behalf of the board I have been in contact with the group and the Secretary and I are hoping to meet them on my return from Australia and before the next Directors meeting. I have also been in contact with our DG Andrew Hamilton and our ADG Nick Woods for advice and they have also sent me some info about Satellite clubs and how they function under the Rotary banner. I have had great support and advice from our secretary and I thank him for that. Can I also thank you all for your emails of support as we work through this. Your support has been overwhelming.

Last week it was my pleasure to announce that the directors had given Catherine Little the honour of now being an honorary member of the Wanaka Rotary Club. Congratulations Catherine you have been a long standing member of our club and it is well disserved.

It was also great to welcome transferring Rotarian Alan Richardson into our club. While we had a long introduction from John we look forward to hearing about your life in an own job talk soon. Great to have you as a member and look forward to seeing at our meetings.

This coming week Past President Fran will be taking the meeting and we talked yesterday about contacting some of the more senior members to maybe say a little about their lives as many new members may not know about their past.

I have just been shopping with my son and gave a donation to a Rotary fundraiser for Drought affected farmers and will be attending there club meeting next week. One of the great things about the Rotary organisation is that you can attend a meeting anywhere in the world and you are with friends. I have been to meetings in Japan (2), Switzerland, Denmark, Australia (3), Prague, Budapest and Split.

Have a good week and see you on my return.

NEW APOLOGY PROCESS

* A Rotary member will prepare the meal register and forward to the Golf Club by the specified time. Fran Tate will look after this duty until the end of August and will help the next person in line for the job.

* In the event of an emergency (circumstances beyond your control)

Contact President George 0272 010 470

In closing, it would be very much appreciated if everyone would endeavour to help streamline this procedure. The Golf Club Caterer Courtney Morgan will replace Ariana Mahia.

Guest Speaker Report 7 August 2018

Russell Garbutt

This week Wanaka Rotary members were given a Vision of how there could be sustainable and eco friendly heating in our community. Russell Garbett, a member of the Central Lakes Heating Trust, shared his hopes beginning by saying that he had no expertise in the matter as his working life was spent as a broadcaster and in media work at Otago University as well as goat farming in Norway!

However, he sees what could happen if we used, for example the waters of the Clutha River, to heat the communities it flows by. The principle is the same as the heat pumps we use now, but with the use of natural heat in the ground and water. Russell sited successful  systems being used in Scotland and Norway, and by the Lakes District Hospital in Frankton. At the hospital water from Lake Wakatipu is used to heat the hospital.

He listed factors which limited the developing of the idea. These were: local authority rules; developers doing a fast job; builders doing the same; buyers doing what was best for themselves. Russell suggested that owners of new homes should stop and consider the running costs of their homes in the future.
During question time important points were raised and discussed.

The Vision has been given--let us not dismiss it; let us as communities see how we can do things in a 'cleaner, greener way"---to borrow a well used phrase.

Hi David,

Thank you for the funding to help me attend Festival for the Future. It was an extremely beneficial experience; I was able to make new contacts, speak to some of New Zealand's leading CEOs, politicians and activists, and learn about a variety of relevant topics.

Thanks again, Jaime
