WASRAG News Letter June 2018, here’s an excerpt from the Newsletter about other Rotary Clubs further afield and their projects - impressive!

20 Metric tons of Garbage

On World Water Day, March 22, 2018, the Rotary Clubs of Cucuta, Colombia coordinated 900 volunteers to complete a massive River Clean-up of the Rio Pamplonita.

The volunteers collected over 20 metric tons of garbage. In addition, a local contractor donated some heavy equipment to remove a dump site in the river.

This is only one of the inspiring projects that clubs tackled around the world as part of the WASRAG World Water Day Competition.

Bringing Water to a Mayan Village
The Rotary Club of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, together with the Beaches Rotaract Club and District 6970 partnered with a number of other groups to bring a clean, consistent water supply to 120 families of the La Esperanza community, Guatemala.

The village raised money to capture water from a spring and pump it to the village. The Rotary clubs took on the responsibility to make the connections to the homes, including drainage basins, gray water seepage pits, meters and tap stands.
This year the group of partners are returning to the community to install storage tanks.

GUEST SPEAKER: Rhodes Donald - Life after Farming

Rhodes talked about the two years interviewing retired farming couples and farm advisers. After 30 interviews , he decided to publish his research, in a book called, Life After Farming. He very generously brought several copies of his book for members. The study was to be about other things, softer things, not who got the farm or even how the farming couple would pay for their lifestyle in retirement. He was more interested in how the couples coped with the transition to life after farming: emotionally, physically and spiritually. How did they spend their time? What was important to them now? What did they do well? What didn't go so well? What did the future hold?
During the interview process, Rhodes could tell that the couples enjoyed telling their stories and the feedback he received was that, talking things through was fun and also got them thinking.
In summary, Rhodes concluded that the retirees were pro-active about maintaining good health, that they could see that developing their social sides and relationships was important and that re-kindling relationships with their spouse was a good thing especially sharing interests and talking! There were other important considerations about preparing for retirement, BUT you will have to read the book to find out!
