REMINDER - STILL MEETING THIS WEEK EVEN THOU NO MEETING AT Golf Club!

JACK RABBIT at West Meadows

Casual Catch up for ALL members

5pm - 6pm

EVERY TUESDAY just before the Weekly Rotary Meeting

DEADLINE FOR THE BULLETIN IS THURSDAY PM.

Club Membership Fees Due Now!

You will have all received an invoice for the Rotary Club of Wanaka membership fees which are due now. You will see there is a discount if paid before the 20th of September 2018.

Many clubs around New Zealand have set their subs within the $200 to $240 range so this Club is in line with that.

We pay the Rotary International affiliation fees as soon as the new year begins – 1 July 2018. This is based on the number of members at the 1st July 2017 and is for six months. The second 6 months is invoiced in January 2018. Rotary International get their data for the invoice from Club Runner and will pick up that our Club will have increased its membership over the next six months (assuming all our new members are signed in!).

A couple of years ago I did some pie charts to show the breakdown of where membership fees are allocated. I intend to update this and will put it in the Bulletin in due course. In brief the fees you pay go towards District affiliation, Rotary International affiliation, Rotary Down Under magazine and towards the Club running costs such as Club Runner/website management, the PO Box for Charitable Trust applications, speaker meal and thank you costs.

To make sure you get the discount on offer why not pay now or set up an advance payment in your banking system so you don’t miss out! From the Treasurer – Margaret West

Tititea Lodge Working Bee - Weekend 22/23rd September 2018

The Rotary Club of Wanaka has been asked to assist with some general maintenance tasks for the weekend of 22/23rd September 2018 at Tititea Lodge. For those members attending, all food and accommodation will be provided. Assuming that we have a favourable weather forecast, the intention is to all meet up in the Roys Bay Car Park (start of Waterfall Creek Track) at 9.00am on Saturday, 22 September. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for the journey via Wanaka - Mt Aspiring Road and Cameron Flat Road, with the intention to carpool.

After a good breakfast and a general tidy up on the Sunday, we should be back in Wanaka around 1pm.

For newer members, Tititea Lodge is located in the East Matukituki Valley on the edge of Mount Aspiring National Park. It is approximately a 48 km drive from Wanaka. Access is across a river, which is provided by a tractor and trailer. Travelling time is around 1 hour.

The Lodge hosts comprehensive senior outdoor education programmes for college students, which is administered by Dunstan High School and Mount Aspiring College.

Tititea Lodge was established in 1969 (almost 50 years ago) and was previously the homestead for the Aspinall family, the owners of Mt Aspiring Station. The original building dates back to the 1920s. Over the years various modifications and extensions have been made, and the lodge now has accommodation for 42 people.

See John Huddleston for any further information.

Where are they now?

Hi Rotarians

I’m on the hunt for a warm caravan to borrow for a couple of months.
We have our niece living with us at present while she completes her final few months at mount aspiring college before she heads off to do a nursing degree.
We’re currently renting a small home while we complete our new build and space is very tight.
Ideally we would like to borrow a small caravan to use until approx November, that we can park in our drive for my niece to use as a bedroom.
Is there anything out there that we can use for a short term or until November?
I look forward to hearing from anyone on jarrod@willowridge.co.nz or 027 2512007.
Many thanks.

Kind Regards
Jarrod Frazer

Tuesday 4 September 2018 - President George's Message:

Hello from Samoa. Mary and I arrived here yesterday evening and have a great villa  just meters from the sea in a lovely adults only resort.

As President you really get to appreciate the workings of an active, fun club such as we have here in Wanaka. Within the club we have a wide range of members both old and new, young and old from all walks of life. We all have different skills and abilities and I believe this is what Paul Harris had in mind when he started the great organisation we have today called Rotary. With all of the factors considered and meeting on a regular basis we get to identify and hear of needs within our communities both locally and internationally where we can make a difference. But it is more than that, it is also about having fun and that is something we do particularly well in Wanaka.

I believe you will see in the bulletin this week a range of activities that have been or are in the process of being planned for the coming year and even into the next rotary year. I want to mention just a few.

The first is the Jazz night. We have a great musician in Trevor, in the club and with some of his friends we should have a great time dancing the night away.  Chris  and his team along with Trevor are busy with the planning.

One of the next events is the fishing competition with the Timaru club. Many members enjoy the fellowship  away in Makarora fishing, finishing with the pig on the spit at Glendhu to conclude the event.

There are many more activities throughout the year that suit a wide range of members interests, from 4wheel driving to visiting my home town of Gore.
But it is not all about fun and we have a great team under Richard organising the upcoming fundraising events. Without these we cannot make the difference we do in our community.

October is particularly busy firstly with the Koru Trio headed by Don Irvine. While I am not involved in the organisation of this event, I am copied into the emails that are going back and forward and realise the commitment and skills different members have.

We also have the book sale coming up, and again we have a different group of people giving of there time and energy, but on some very chilly mornings I understand.

And lastly  the duck race another fun day as people young and old watch there duck float down the creek. Last years addition of the corporate ducks was a huge success and hopefully it will be again this year.

The last fundraiser I want to mention is a trip to Minaret Station. I had been working on the idea along with Karl as just a visit, in place of a club meeting during the year. With the tradgety that happened a few weeks ago I suggested at directors last week that we make this into a club fundraiser and give the money raised to One of the rescue organisations in Wanaka.

Remember no Rotary this week.

Enjoy your week and have fun in Wanaka.

Guest Speaker Report 28 August
Jaime Roy
Toastmasters

We were all dually entertained by Jaime when he spoke to us on Tuesday night. Jamie has a vast knowledge of social media and professional online networking and for 10 years has been a toastmaster speaking to small groups right through to some of New Zealand’s largest corporate companies. His main topic was to inform us about the value of Toastmasters in developing our interpersonal skills and our confidence in the delivery of public speaking. To hear Jamie talk it appeared to be a natural thing.

Jamie was born in Alexandra and his Father Rob Roy is a member and past president of the Alexandra Rotary club and is known to many members. Jamie now lives in Wanaka with his family and operates his business from here.

To test and critic some public speaking George asked firstly our own Chris Wright and then Sylvia Duff to deliver a 3 minute speech on a topic nominated by our president. Given the topic they covered to an unskilled eye they both spoke very well. This was then critiqued by Jaime and it without there being a winner of the two he each noted there good and bad points. To be fair, Sylvia being the drama and speech teacher, showed as expected more skill in this area. Our thanks go to both in taking up the challenge and we all enjoyed their participation and Jaime talking to us about Toastmasters.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION - TORONTO, CANADA

Posted by Tania Lowery

What an awesome Rotary experience this was!  To all those Rotarians who have never been to an International Convention, go if you possibly can.  It is the best way to truly appreciate the “International” in Rotary International.  To be surrounded by 24,000 like-minded people passionate about making a difference in the world is very inspiring and recharges your Rotary batteries, ready to face the coming year (and in my case, the District Governor Elect role).
Convention in bullet point form (so you don’t get bored reading):
  • Opening ceremony – great entertainment, all the Rotary ra-ra, thousands of people, inspirational speeches.
  • House of Friendship – hundreds of displays, all the Rotary bling, clothing and accessories you could ever wish for!  A great way to get new ideas for projects and to see what other projects are going on around the world.  This is where you can find out more about the Rotary Action Groups that you are interested in.
  • Breakout sessions – you have to be quick for these, it’s ‘first in, first served” for seating, and when you are competing with 24,000 other keen Rotarians it can be pretty tough going.  I missed out on some of the things I really wanted to see, but did get into the Social Media and the E-Learning sessions, both areas that I am keen to know more about.
  • District Governor Elect breakout session with Mark Maloney – met a few of my fellow classmates from the 2019-20 year, and Mark Maloney introduced his family and told us a bit about himself.
Best thing about Convention – the people you meet!  This is where you can make contacts that help you and your club get involved with international projects.  There are people from all around the world, and its so good to talk to Rotarians who are doing different things in different parts of the world.  And everything is so huge!  The scale of international events is hard to imagine without attending one.

Thanks to my great Rotary travel companions – Ewan and Ailsa McKenzie (Waimate) and Fergus McKenzie (Balclutha).
