Tuesday 7 May

There has been a lot happening in Rotary during the past 2 weeks.

Firstly we had the Tasmanian Professional Development team here for 3 days. On the Tuesday night they gave us an overview of Tasmania an island that several of our members have visited in the last couple of years. On Wednesday we spent the morning with Geoff Marks from Lake Wanaka Tourism and Phil Hunt a past President of Otago Federated Farmers. In the afternoon we went out to the airport and spent time with Jonathan Wallis form Alpine Helicopters and Minaret Station before going out to Wild Wire in the Matukituki Valley. On Thursday we went to the ANZAC dawn service followed by a trip out to West Wanaka Station hearing first from Mark Orbell about his business and myself about the farm and the relationship between the two. That evening we had a lovely meal prepared by Chris Wright and the hosts families at my home. The following day we took them to conference at Oamaru.

Wanaka had a good turnout of members go to conference and heard a number of great speakers. Myself I was not feeling that well and missed the Saturday but managed the evening function where the Wanaka team dressed as Musterers.

At directors meeting last week we made donations to the new  Wanaka Community House, Nicko Mannix (to assist with modifications to a new car for him) and also furniture for the Rugby club rooms at the show grounds. John Huddleston and his committee  presented an updated funding guidelines and Admendments to the RCW Charitable Trust Application for Financial Assistance Form. The directors have now asked Don Irvine and 3 other members to review these documents and report back before the next directors meeting. John Huddleston has also been instrumental in us acquiring a new fundraising venture next year assisting with the Gibbston Valley music festival next year. Wanaka Rotary will be looking for as many members as possible to assist with this. Free tickets will be available to all those that help on the day. DO NOT BUY TICKETS WHEN THEY GO ON SALE .

This coming week remember there is no Rotary on Tuesday night but instead we have a quiz night on Thursday night. This has the potential to be a good fundraising for Polio. Mary and I have organised 2 teams to enter. Talking with Deans last night I understand there was still room for a few more teams so if you have not got a team together it’s not to late.
Look forward to seeing you on Thursday

Regards, President George

Mark Morrison - Speaker 30 April 2019

Last week we had the privilege of meeting and hearing from Mark Morrison owner of Wildwire and adventure tour company based in Wanaka. Mark has expensively travelled around the world and was involved in many adventurous missions from his young age. He is mainly focussed on mountain climbing and experiencing the wild life. Mark has been to Antarctica and to Himalayas that challenges him and have helped many to survive from the sliding glaziers and from other critical spots.

It was great to hear from Mark who is also the chair of Lake Wanaka tourism board and passionate about contributing to the community also. One of his quote was “Luck is what you make it” and was very inspirational to all

We had 4 shifts of 6 for the 2 days and apart from a couple of wee glitches it all worked out well and Richard believes  the event was a success. A huge thank-you to everyone who gave up their time to volunteer at Easter. We  raised for $1500.00

1 May 2019

Dear District Governor Andrew

Please help us to launch NZ and Pacific Rotary’s 2021 Centennial celebrations

On behalf of the New Zealand and Pacific Rotary 100 Project Committee, I am pleased to tell you that celebrations leading up to our Centennial will commence on 20 June 2019. Her Excellency, Dame Patsy Reddy, GNZM, QSO Governor-General of New Zealand, is hosting a celebratory event to officially launch Rotary 100, our proud observation of Rotary’s centenary in New Zealand and the Pacific.  The event will be held at Government House, 1 Rugby Street, Wellington on Thursday 20 June from 5.15-8.00 pm.

We look forward to appropriately acknowledging Rotary’s great history in New Zealand and the Pacific and to state our determination as an organisation to commence another successful century of Service to our community.

This event will be a gathering of distinguished Rotarians and representatives from influential groups from across New Zealand and the Pacific.

Government House can accept 250 invited guests including Rotarians, friends, dignitaries and potential financial supporters.  Refreshments will be served prior to 6.00 pm when the Governor General and speakers will address us.  Guests will then be invited to visit the library and other rooms at Government House, where there will be displays of three major Rotary projects including:

Mana Tangata - People of Action - One hundred years of Rotary Achievement in NZ and the Pacific and what lies ahead
Forests of Peace and Remembrance - a significant trees project
Rotary Give Every Child A Future - 100,000 plus children immunised in nine Pacific countries over the next three years.

Your District 9980 has been allocated a total of twenty (20) guest places for the event.  We are looking to you as District Governor, and your DG Train, to select your allocated invitees and seek their confirmation that they will be available.  Note that the costs of travel and accommodation will be an expense to those attending.  When considering your guest list, please take into consideration factors that are important to your district.  These may include high achieving members of your district and their partners, people who have been awarded Community Paul Harris Fellowships, significant financial supporters of Rotary and members of Rotaract.

We will need names, email contact details, telephone numbers, physical address and their Club, for each person on your list.  It is essential that by Friday May 17 we receive the details of your twenty District 9980 invitees (see attached Excel data sheet).

All invitee names and email addresses will then be provided to Government House.  The official invitations will be emailed by Government House and will Include information about dress code and parking facilities.  Those attending will be required to bring their invitation with them.

Can you please also provide a further six names that we can hold in reserve as often people find, closer to the time, that they cannot attend.  This way we can ensure that we have a back-up list of people that Government House can invite should further places become available.  If you find you do not have sufficient guests to fill all the twenty places allocated to your District, please let me know urgently so I can reallocate those places to another District.

We may be able to find billeted accommodation in Wellington for anyone who would prefer that.  We would like to receive any indication of guests’ preference for billets, along with the contact details, when you send the list of confirmed attendees.

In summary, could you please provide us by 17 May with the following:
  • your priority list of twenty invitees who have confirmed their availability to attend the event, entered onto the data sheet which will be returned to us.
  • a reserve list of a further six names (also with confirmed availability)
  • notification of any shortfall in your total that we can then re-allocate elsewhere
  • billeting requirements of any attendees.

We look forward to your District being represented at this significant milestone event in our Rotary history.

On behalf of the New Zealand and Pacific Rotary 100 Project Committee,

Yours in Rotary

Gillian

Cure KidsCure Kids Vision - A healthy childhood for everyone.

We focus on raising funding to enable high-impact, New Zealand-based medical research to help save, extend and improve the lives of children diagnosed with serious life-impacting and life-limiting health conditions.

Cure Kids was established by Rotary in 1971 as the Child Health Research Foundation, and since then we have invested more than $40 million in New Zealand research which has helped to shape and vastly improve the way children who live with serious diseases and health conditions are diagnosed and treated.

Cure Kids’ funding supports researchers across New Zealand whose work focuses on childhood cancers, inherited heart conditions, epilepsy, infectious diseases, cystic fibrosis, sudden unexpected death in infants (SUDI), stillbirth, burns as well as child and adolescent mental health – and many, many other areas of research.

Cure Kids is the largest funder of child health research outside the government. We work hard to support the best research possible to make a measurable difference to the health and well-being of children in New Zealand. This is made possible by the continued generosity of individuals, businesses and community groups across our remarkable country.
