Casual Catch up for ALL members

5pm - 6pm

EVERY TUESDAY just before the Weekly Rotary Meeting

DEADLINE FOR THE BULLETIN IS THURSDAY PM.

Club Membership Fees Due Now!

You will have all received an invoice for the Rotary Club of Wanaka membership fees which are due now. You will see there is a discount if paid before the 20th of September 2018.

Many clubs around New Zealand have set their subs within the $200 to $240 range so this Club is in line with that.

We pay the Rotary International affiliation fees as soon as the new year begins – 1 July 2018. This is based on the number of members at the 1st July 2017 and is for six months. The second 6 months is invoiced in January 2018. Rotary International get their data for the invoice from Club Runner and will pick up that our Club will have increased its membership over the next six months (assuming all our new members are signed in!).

A couple of years ago I did some pie charts to show the breakdown of where membership fees are allocated. I intend to update this and will put it in the Bulletin in due course. In brief the fees you pay go towards District affiliation, Rotary International affiliation, Rotary Down Under magazine and towards the Club running costs such as Club Runner/website management, the PO Box for Charitable Trust applications, speaker meal and thank you costs.

To make sure you get the discount on offer why not pay now or set up an advance payment in your banking system so you don’t miss out! From the Treasurer – Margaret West

Tititea Lodge Working Bee - Weekend 22/23rd September 2018

The Rotary Club of Wanaka has been asked to assist with some general maintenance tasks for the weekend of 22/23rd September 2018 at Tititea Lodge. For those members attending, all food and accommodation will be provided. Assuming that we have a favourable weather forecast, the intention is to all meet up in the Roys Bay Car Park (start of Waterfall Creek Track) at 9.00am on Saturday, 22 September. A 4WD vehicle is recommended for the journey via Wanaka - Mt Aspiring Road and Cameron Flat Road, with the intention to carpool.

After a good breakfast and a general tidy up on the Sunday, we should be back in Wanaka around 1pm.

For newer members, Tititea Lodge is located in the East Matukituki Valley on the edge of Mount Aspiring National Park. It is approximately a 48 km drive from Wanaka. Access is across a river, which is provided by a tractor and trailer. Travelling time is around 1 hour.

The Lodge hosts comprehensive senior outdoor education programmes for college students, which is administered by Dunstan High School and Mount Aspiring College.

Tititea Lodge was established in 1969 (almost 50 years ago) and was previously the homestead for the Aspinall family, the owners of Mt Aspiring Station. The original building dates back to the 1920s. Over the years various modifications and extensions have been made, and the lodge now has accommodation for 42 people.

See John Huddleston for any further information.

Hi Rotarians

I’m on the hunt for a warm caravan to borrow for a couple of months.
We have our niece living with us at present while she completes her final few months at mount aspiring college before she heads off to do a nursing degree.
We’re currently renting a small home while we complete our new build and space is very tight.
Ideally we would like to borrow a small caravan to use until approx November, that we can park in our drive for my niece to use as a bedroom.
Is there anything out there that we can use for a short term or until November?
I look forward to hearing from anyone on jarrod@willowridge.co.nz or 027 2512007.
Many thanks.

Kind Regards
Jarrod Frazer

Tuesday 28 August 2018 - President George's Message:

Wow what a great night at Rotary last week. Firstly great to welcome 3 new members Alison, Bruce and Tom into the Wanaka Rotary Club. That is 5 so far this Calendar year with another Viv Milsom this coming week. There is possibly another 5 to come soon. We have had Bruce transfer a couple of weeks ago and Mathew soon and possibly one more later in the year. It is great to have all these new members but we must remember to continue to make them welcome and feel part of the club.

Debs has organised an evening for them at her house where we will tell them a little about Rotary and this club. Thanks for the great work Debs.

We must continue to look for new members as I am sure there are people here in Wanaka who would enjoy being part of a fantastic Rotary Club

Secondly it was great to see the fellowship on Tuesday. There must have been close to 20 members at Jack Rabbit. All new members please come and join us at Jack Rabbit for a social hour between 5.00pm and 6.00pm. At the Golf Club from the top table it was great to see everyone happy and enjoying the company of their Rotary friends. This to me is what Rotary is all about. We have a great club where though our friendships we can identify areas of need in the community and the world and are able to make a real difference to people’s lives

The Board of Directors have invited the proposed Satellite Club to a special Directors meeting to listen to their proposal.

This morning I spent time out on West Wanaka Station walking around part of the farm planning for a special trip where we will have 65 clients out for the day. It is great to be involved in the planning of a new trip and as a retired person to feel valued. I feel so lucky to work for Ridgeline but also to live and work in such a great environment.

Please members who have duties you must find a replacement and advise me if you cannot make it to a meeting. Last week we had several who failed to do either.

After the meeting this week I leave for Samoa for a holiday, but while there hope to make contact with a Rotary club.

Have a good week and see you at Rotary on Tuesday.

Guest Speakers Report 21 August
Callum MacLeod

There was a good number of members and visitors to hear Deputy Mayor Callum McLeod  speak. He came to Wanaka in 1989 and noted that the population of the district has quadrupled in size since then. Callum  quoted a 1972 comment by Norman Kirk which highlighted the need for housing in Queenstown--that need exists throughout the Queenstown Lakes District Council still today.

He spoke of the need to meet the challenges facing the area and said that a bed tax set locally was better than one set at the boarder. He sited the success of such a system used in the cantons in Switzerland. Callum gave the interesting figure of 33 visitors per 1 resident in the QLDC, and this raises the question of providing the services required to handle such numbers. A CBD line has been drawn for Wanaka and discussion continues about a master plan for the whole of the Upper Clutha. There was good debate during question time and some members were still in discussion with the Deputy Mayor after the meeting closed.

An excellent DG talk from Andrew Hamilton held at the Rotary Club on Dunedin Central on Tuesday night the 21st of August. Very motivating for all of us.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

RI Presidential message of September 2018

Imagine if we could take a snapshot capturing all of the work Rotary does on a given day. No one – except Rotarians – would believe that a single organization was capable of accomplishing so much. In that snapshot you would see dedicated volunteers working to eradicate polio, setting up microloans, providing clean water, mentoring youth, and countless other actions.

We can do all these thanks both to our geographic reach and to the fact that our clubs are made up of people who are engaged in their communities. As a part of the community that you serve, you know the needs, you have the connections, and you're able to take immediate action. That's why every Rotary club's membership should reflect the diversity of its community.

We've made great strides in this. In Egypt, Indonesia, and Kenya, Rotary is approaching 50 percent female membership. We're also expanding the age diversity of our clubs. In each of our communities, young professionals are eager to contribute their talents, give back, and learn from mentors. Let's share with them what Rotary is all about. The Engaging Younger Professionals Toolkit at Rotary.org has an action plan to help you reach young leaders and Rotary alumni in your area.

Another resource that can help us better reflect our communities – one that is global like us, is a quarter-million member strong, and already shares our values of service and leadership – is Rotaract. Rotaractors are our partners: Team up with them on projects, ask them to speak at your events, and invite them to join your club. Dedicated Rotaractors worldwide are becoming members of Rotary and even starting new Rotary clubs while still serving as members of Rotaract.

The world needs Rotary, and Rotary needs strong clubs and engaged members in order to do more good. It is our responsibility – yours and mine – to make sure everyone who shows an interest in joining Rotary gets an invitation. Make use of the Membership Leads tool at Rotary.org, which helps people who are interested in joining Rotary connect with a club that's right for them. And let's ensure that every member has a reason to stay. By building strong clubs that engage in meaningful projects and have fun along the way, we provide value to our club members that they cannot find anywhere else.

Let's not keep Rotary's story – the story captured in those snapshots of service – to ourselves. I challenge you to invite leaders of all ages, men, and women, who are looking for a way to give back. By doing so, you will Be the Inspiration in your community and help Rotary continue to do good in the world.

Barry Rassin
Rotary International President 2018-19
