Candace Bangura is a non-profit manager with over 30 years of experience working in community development. Prior to arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand she had paid and volunteer roles with the Peace Corps, Rotary International, World Relief, and Amnesty International. Living in Southland for the past 10 years, Candace served as the Director of the Number 10 Youth One Stop Shop and is currently the General Manager of the Southern Charity Hospital. Her involvement with Rotary started with 10 years of employment at The Rotary Foundation in the humanitarian grants area where she served as the Area of Focus Manager for Economic and Community Development. As a Rotarian she has served as a club president, assistant district governor, member of the district rotary foundation committee, and member of the cadre of technical advisors. Candace is motivated by exposure to different cultures and viewpoints. She was born in the United States and has lived in the Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Paraguay, the United Kingdom, and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Candace's talk focused on how to approach African Global Grants. The key components being;
Host Rotarians take the lead, work with local community members; conduct an assessment and design the project.
Focus on cross cultural understanding and building a trusting relationship between Rotarians.
Seek out and build upon local assets/knowledge.
Address one or more pressing needs that improve the daily existence of community members.
Ensure a core aspect of the project is skill building, behaviour change and increased knowledge.
District Speech Competition
Dani Maguire, winner of our MAC Speech Comp went to Dunedin two weeks ago to compete in the District Speech Comp and was placed 3rd.

Are you ready to disrupt your routine and deep-dive into a high-impact, mission-critical volunteer role? The Rotary Club of Wanaka is headhunting a visionary wordsmith/s to own our fortnightly bulletin and become our Chief Storytelling Officer / s
Forget quiet quitting; it's time for quiet succeeding! We're offering a game-changing opportunity to leverage your skillset and pivot into a space where community and action are our core deliverables. As our Bulletin Editor, you will be the key stakeholder in architecting the narrative of our club's ecosystem. You'll be at the bleeding edge of Wanaka's community service scene, curating content that drives engagement and keeps our thought leaders seamlessly integrated.
This is a remote-first, agile role offering unparalleled flexibility. We just need you to move the needle each week and deliver the alpha version of the bulletin before our Tuesday scrum (meeting).
Your Key Result Areas (KRAs):
Content Evangelism: Proactively interface with key stakeholders (the Club President, board members, etc.) to source mission-critical intel on upcoming deliverables, events, and strategic initiatives.
Narrative Architecture: Wordsmith, ideate, and productionise compelling, data-driven (mostly anecdotal) content. You will be empowered to sunset outdated phrasing and champion a paradigm of impactful communication.
UI/UX Optimisation: Utilise our established design-thinking template to craft a visually synergistic bulletin. We're talking seamless integration of text and JPEGs. Low-hanging fruit, big impact.
Bandwidth Utilisation: Push the final deliverable to our user base (club members) via our dedicated digital pipeline (email).
Cloud Integration: Circle back and upload the bulletin to our digital asset management platform (the club website).

Wanaka Rotary assisting Kahu Youth with vegetable preparation
Greetings from D9815, Melbourne and Gippsland Areas. My local club is Maroondah, about 30km NE of Melbourne. Valda, I am an aviation nut, having attended the Royal International Tatoo (RIAT) in the UK, and a regular attendee to Avalon International Airshow (near Geelong) and Warbirds Downunder at Temora (NSW). I have always coveted attending Warbirds over Wanaka and have started looking forward to my options for 2026 and attending WOW over the Easter Weekend. I notice from the club website that the club assists in the running of the event, although there is no indication of exactly what you do. If i was to indicate that I would be available to assist over the weekend, would that be something your club would entertain? As I did when I went to RIAT in 2016, i was hosted by Rotarians in the near area and wonder if amongst your members there would be a Rotarian willing to host me for 3-4 day? I will have my own means of transport over the stay period. If home hosting isn't available, do you have connections in the accomodation industry where you might suggest i look for somewhere to stay? Rotary member Helen Tait recently had the good fortune to escort an E-bike tour to Tuscany - one of those magic tours where everything came together - great group, perfect weather, super-efficient support crew, excellent accommodation and food, and, of course cycling through stunning countryside. Helen will be doing another tour this year, (24 September - 10 October) with Tours Direct and Edelweiss, the same great support team, this time to Provence, via a Paris stopover.
