The Upper Clutha Childrens Medical Trust (check it out on www.uccmedtrust.co.nz and see exactly what we do) is holding a quiz night at the Wanaka Golf Clubhouse at 7 pm on Friday the 13th April 2018.

We are looking for teams of 6 - 8 people with the cost of entry being $15 per person.  You are guaranteed heaps of fun with quiz master George Smyth.  There is a cash bar, supper and outstanding raffle, spot prizes and just 1 auction of an outstanding flight package around Mount Cook.

It would be great if Rotary could put together some teams and come along and support such a great cause.

Please get in touch with Dave Evans or Derek Valentine to get your tickets.

Tuesday 13th March 2018  - President Fran's Message:
It’s good to be back from the vastness of the Canadian Rockies. 28 hours from Wanaka to Rossland, BC and 30 hours back! Horrendous immigration & security procedure in San Fran; however, once done , it was easy peasy, though navigating Spokane (US) with 2 GPS’ was a challenge.  Arrival in Rossland was 1am of the following day.

Was it worth it, indeed YES, it snowed most days, with soft fluffies and the temperature was a balmy 2dg C to -13dgC, with the odd dramatic drop to -23dgC.
Noted in the 3 areas visited, was the prescence of the Rotary Wheel !

In Brief:
A&P Show – What a success from several angles!  Thumbs up to our team leaders!  Congratulations Rotarians & MAC students who worked tirelessly over the 2 days. The public interaction with the students behind the Ravensdown & Farmlands food counters was gratifying. If nothing else, the weekend was excellent PR for the club.

Membership Satisfaction Survey - A Reminder: Please complete the MSS in Survey Monkey, there has been an OK response but it could be better. If you want to have a SAY then this is one opportunity to do just that! If you are having technical probs then contact Pete Barrow.

Rotarian Cyclotourist  Pascal Temmar, from the Rotary Club of Noumea Ducos Bulari, now home having travelled 5262kms.  His last day in New Zealand was 27 February. He was very appreciative of the hospitality that was extended to him as he passed through Wanaka.

Rotary Speech Competition  - Coming up. The Youth Committee has 20th March pencilled in at the moment.  Numbers of participants to be confirmed.

Jimmy Griffiths - Speaker Report 6th March 2018
Shelter Box New Zealand
I am sure all present on Tuesday night will agree that Jimmy Griffiths, a member of Shelter Box First Response Team, gave an exemplary summary of their  work with World wide Disasters in the last 3 years.
These highly trained disaster volunteers fly into disaster zones to evaluate what resources are required They are in before any other emergency service affiliated to the United Nations can go because they are all volunteers and don’t require UN funding.

Main points of interest:
  • Shelter Box started in 2002 and then partnered with Rotary in 2004
  • 40% of funding comes from World Wide Rotary along with the valuable local knowledge of the local Rotarians living in close proximity to these disasters
  • ERKS (Emergency Kits) rather than Shelter Boxes are needed more because of lack of suitable land, and intervention of politics to where the SB will be erected.
  • ERKs are quicker to deliver and can support more people with the basics to repair or build basic shelter.
  • Contents of Shelter Boxes and ERKS are constatntly being reviewed and replaced with more suitable components to the region of disaster
  • Flooding is the hardest, as no suitable land to erect shelter.
  • Since the start of Shelter box, 85 Million people have been displaced though a variety of disasters making them homeless
  • Before August 2017, there were already around 307,500 Rohingya refugees living in camps, makeshift settlements and with host communities, according to the UNHCR. A further 655,000 are estimated to have arrived since August 2017 and they have had to contend with Measles and Cholera out break breaks among the camps
  • 800-900 thousand people are now having to walk for miles to source firewood as tornadoes and tsunamis had devastated  forests.
  • Jimmy visited Peru when over 200,00- people lost everything due to severe flooding. He felt uncomfortable being  taken out to dinner by a local Rotarian to a 5 star establishment nearby When he voiced his discomfort the Roatrian replied
“Jimmy, the world of scarcity relies on the world of abundance”
We all can be very thankful to live in a place of abundance!

Rotary New Zealand and Pacific Islands Restructuring Proposal

1. All 6 existing Districts in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands will join to make one District.
2. Each of the existing “Districts” will become an “Area” within the new District. This makes sense in terms of geographical distance and population distribution, and will also make the transition to the new structure much easier.
3. An office will be established, preferably in Wellington because of its central location. This office is staffed with at least one full-time (or equivalent) paid administrator.
4. Each Area will elect an “Area Governor” (AG) and an “Area Governor-Elect” (AGE) – the AG has a role similar to the current District Governors in terms of club visits and Area coordination.
5. The AG’s and AGE’s will collectively make up a Board which is the governance body for Rotary in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Each person will serve a two-year term on this Board, with half rotating off the Board each year.
6. The Board will have a governance role with specific responsibility for Rotary International and Zone liaison, finance (including sponsorship and major fundraising campaigns), public relations, IT and communication, major internal and international projects (including emergency aid), membership initiatives, Foundation, training etc
7. The Board will appoint a past Area Governor as the President of Rotary New Zealand and Pacific Islands. This person acts as the Chair of the Board (which has 13 members) and spokesperson/representative of Rotary for the whole District for a one-year term.
8. The Board will appoint committees to carry out the work involved in its areas of responsibility.
9. A new District Constitution will be developed which will outline the operation and responsibilities of the Board.
10. Area Governors will each year appoint committees within their area to carry out Training, Rotary Youth programmes, Alumni, Foundation grant administration, local publicity and other local Rotary programmes.
11. Each Area will retain its current Trust and reserve funds and will make decisions about how those funds will be used (in accordance with Trust deeds, terms of bequests etc). Each Area will have an Area Committee appointed by the AG.
