To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
Greetings everyone,
Winter has arrived with the fire now going most days. I hope everyone is keeping warm & active. I am just in
from trimming another tree & cutting the grass. I see that they have started to make snow on the trails at Treble Cone & am looking forward to the ski session.
Remember change over dinner is on Friday 3 July & there will be no Rotary meeting on Tuesday 30 June 2026.
Please get your tickets sorted for this special evening of Rotary fellowship & fun. Everyone is welcome.
Last week Chris & Ellie Wright hosted a social evening at their new home. I am sorry I didn’t make it but heard
that there was a great “Rotary buzz”. Thank you Chris & Ellie for this special evening.
On 26 th May we heard from Robyn Brighouse from Alzheimer’s Otago who explained what this condition is & the
differing types of dementia.
The new cohort of five-year-olds starting schools on the 2nd June all received their literacy packs from our Rotary
Club. The feedback from the schools has been outstanding with children at Hawea Flat Primary School telling
me how excited they were to get their packs as I was over the fence in the kindergarten. Due to the growth in
the numbers of children in our region especially at Hawea Flat Primary School & Tarras, I am looking to purchase
another 20 packs before the end of this year to ensure we complete our commitment for this project.
On Tuesday 26th May our Rotary Enrichment Literacy Project started at MAC with year seven students & six
Rotarians. This project will be held during the school terms on a Tuesday 0900 – 1000 & on a Thursday 0930 – 1030. Well done to everyone involved in this project displaying a real commitment of ‘service above self’. I still
smile when I think of the one of the boys I had who stated when he sat down “I hate reading’. We did lots of
talking, a bit of reading & his comprehension & grammar was great for a boy who didn’t like reading. The object
is about relationships to enhancing learning.
On Saturday 6 th June Geoff Mc attended the district training zoom meetings as the incoming President. We both
attended the Foundation meeting, learning more about the operation of this international branch of Rotary.
Special congratulations to Jonathan Walmisley on his KSM. Make sure you are signed up to the Rotary Club of
Wanaka Face Book page to read about special events in our club.
Next week are committee meetings & this will be your last meeting before the start of the new Rotary year on the 14th July with some changes of Directors & members. Many thanks to all the Directors & members for your continued support of our Rotary Club especially during my Presidency.
Oops, I got it wrong with Taieri Rotary & Lions clubs making over $100k with their crop competition on 15th May.
Check out the results.
Have a wonderful fortnight & see you all back at the Albie on Tuesday 16 June for the MAC speech competition.
Bye for now
Marie

After we have honoured the outgoing year, everything we accomplished, everyone who served and our outgoing President's legacy we will step back in time and enjoy a retro-themed event that’s sure to stir a sense of nostalgia among us. With your help we will recreate the magic of yesteryears for an unforgettable event.
Let’s make this night a lot of fun so if you are in the mood, dress to celebrate the 60s to the mid-80s. Be creative with your ideas for the swinging 60’s through to the 80’s which was full of vivid, psychedelic hues and we all remember the teased hair. A retro-themed event isn’t complete without the right soundtrack to whisk you back in time so we have crafted a nostalgic playlist with tunes that span these vibrant decades. Join your fellow Rotarians and see what else will be revealed on the night.
Upcoming Meeting Night Events
June 16th: MAC Speech Competition.
Previous Meeting Night Events
May 26th: Robyn Brighouse: Alzheimer's Otago.
Robyn, a dementia advisor for Alzheimer's Otago, discussed the differences between Alzheimer's and dementia, emphasizing that dementia is a group of symptoms causing cognitive impairment, with Alzheimer's being the most common. She highlighted the impact of dementia, noting 80,000 people in New Zealand have dementia, with numbers expected to double in 20 years. Robyn shared personal experiences and the importance of early diagnosis and support. She outlined various dementia types, risk factors, and the benefits of lifestyle changes. Robyn also detailed Alzheimer's Otago's support services, including monthly support groups, social activities, and volunteer programs, aiming to create a dementia-friendly community.
Tuesday evening at the Wrights.
A very pleasant evening of nibbles and conviviality was spent with Chris and Allie on Tuesday 2nd June. Some photographs attest to this below. Thank you Chris and Allie for your hospitality.
Rotary Club members at Mt Aspiring College
After the Thursday session of club members helping literacy and reading at MAC, John Milburn spins some of his magic to the kids.
Jonathan Walmisley has been awarded the Kings Service Medal for outstanding service to Coastguard Search and Rescue.
Jonathan's dedication, leadership and countless hours of service have made a significant difference to our community and beyond. This recognition is incredibly well deserved and we are proud to have Jonathan as part of the Rotary Club of Wanaka family.
