Tuesday 10 July 2018 - President George's Message:

Hi All

Well changeover has come and gone. Mary and I enjoyed the night and thank everyone for the great turnout. I enjoyed the town Cryer and while I had asked her, I did not know what she was going to say. Mary had given her all the info about me. Wanaka Rotary do not need to worry about a law suit, I’ve talked to Mary. Maybe when Paddy retires to Wanaka to live she may join Rotary.

A great night was had by all at Alchemy on Tuesday night. Thankyou Rosie for all you’re organising. I think we had 4 new members there and 2 transferring members. Hopefully we can make them all members of Wanaka Rotary this month which is Membership month.

It is great to see the directors all starting to organise events and fundraising for the coming months. A special thanks to Tony for the good PR around the changeover.

Look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday for my first meeting as President and hearing Gordon Bailey speak to us about what he has done over the years. See you Tuesday.

Guest Speakers Bio
Gordon Bailey

Gordon Bailey who hails from Waimate joined our club nearly 2 years ago. His life and work experiences are wide and varied and full of fun . Gordon is a nationally  recognised horticulturist who will give a brief overview of his work / life experiences plus a more in depth presentation on his latest plant hunting expedition in a remote corner of China.

Whisky Evening

The Whisky tasting evening went off very well Friday 6th, with 34 “Tasters” and about 15 “drivers” present. Financially there is likely to be a small contribution to the Trust account, after overheads were kept to a minimum - The “audience” being a mixed bag of Rotarians, Golfers, neighbours and Whisky enthusiasts. Even a couple of prospective members who enjoyed the jovial company.

The Haggis was piped in by Rod McGregor and Whisky Galores Alistair Campbell directed proceeding with his in depth knowledge of anything related to the spirit and the drams that were offered. These included a welcome Cutty Shark, Benromach Organic 7 yr old Speyside, Aberfeldy 15 year old 46% Highland Malt, The Longrow 18 year old from Campbeltown, Port Askaig’s 8 year old from Islay, an Edradour “straight from the cask” 10 year old 55.9% Highland malt and to accompany Mary-Anne McKenzies Christmas cake a stunning Glenfarclas 25 year old 43% Ballindalloch Speyside malt.

In all a great night for those that enjoy a mid winter “spot" with good company.

Derek Howarth - Thank you!

NEW ZEALAND ROTARIANS SUPPORTING OUR PACIFIC NEIGHBOURS

The Emergency Response Kit is distributed to affected families immediately following catastrophic weather and environmental events in Polynesia and Melanesia to support them through the first days after a disaster. With a kit and a little ingenuity, a family is able to construct basic shelter, keep themselves protected from the elements and utilise the immediate survival items that are included.

The value of a kit including the container, contents, freight and storage is approximately $600. The project has been encouraged by the New Zealand Government who over many years has often provided transportation, logistical and financial support. Emergency Response Kits are prepositioned in Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands to enable prompt distribution throughout Polynesia and Melanesia with back up supplies retained in Auckland where the kits are packed by Rotarians and their supporters from the combined clubs. Forward planning is crucial. It is essential adequate stock is on hand to replace that which can be depleted overnight following a disaster.

That is why it is a priority “Every Rotary Club, Every Year” make a financial contribution to cover the at least one kit.

SUPPORT needed. Join with other Rotary Clubs and Rotarians to Make a Difference

IT’S NOT ABOUT US, IT’S ABOUT THEM

FIJI - ROTAHOMES URGENTLY NEED REPLACEMENT VEHICLE 006 (Port Nicholson/Lautoka) Rotahomes still relies on donations from Rotary clubs and members. An existing truck having travelled 800,000 kms has done its last km. A second truck is still operational, but a backup is desperately needed to ensure that the Rotahome and Koroipita Town activities will continue without interruption. Contact bev.wells@xtra.co.nz

FIJI – ANNUAL CATARACT AND EYE SURGERY, TAVEUNI 408 (Tavenui) In the past 10 years over 2600 Fijian people have had their sight restored, life-changing for adults and children. The programme is scheduled for October each year. Surgeons are confirmed. This is a major project undertaken annually requiring on-going financial support from Rotary Clubs matched by a Global Grant.

FIJI – ROTARY PACIFIC WATER FOR LIFE 402 (Suva North) Providing safe water supply and access to improved basic sanitation and hygiene for rural households and schools transforms lives, especially those of women and children. It also builds the community’s resilience. In times of flooding, robust water and sanitation infrastructure reduces the risk of drinking water contamination arising from seepage from damaged facilities. During long dry spells, water stress burdens a community. Over the past 10 years, RPWFL has been responsible for the construction of over 265 projects to bring piped water supplies to rural Fijians. These projects have benefited at least 70,877 villagers.

ROTARY CLUB and ROTARIAN CONTRIBUTIONS WILL BE MATCHED 4 FOR 1 TONGA – CHILDREN WITH ACUTE DISABILITIES 004 (Papanui/Nukuálofa) The disabled are very much neglected in Tonga and receive no financial support. Many families with severely disabled members live in deplorable conditions. Mango Tree Centre which supports 1,000 disabled people is building houses giving dignity to those bedridden, some 24 hours a day. The cost of the house is under $7K NZ.

TONGA – IMPROVING LIVLIHOODS, HEALTH and ENVIRONMENT 313 (Nuku’alofa) This Activity establishes tree planting initiatives, increases communities understanding of land/coastal protection and land/crop/livestock management through raising of vegetables crops and protection of livestock from predation (e.g. poultry) and prevents damage to crops (e.g. pigs).

PACIFIC – INTERPLAST www.interplast.org.au 404 RNZWCS is pleased to support Interplast through an MOU. When you donate to Interplast, you contribute directly to changing futures today. Your donation will give someone in need the chance to have life- changing surgery, and it will give someone the opportunity to learn new skills that will benefit their community for years to come.

PACIFIC – ROMAC http://charityforchildren.org.nz/support-us/ 405 RNZWCS is pleased to support ROMAC. Provides within Australia and New Zealand, medical treatment for children 15 years and under, who are from developing countries, for life saving and/or dignity restoring surgery not available to them in their own country”

PACIFIC - DONATIONS IN KIND 304 New Zealand schools with changing teaching methods have thousands of desks available. Support the cost of Freight to enable this valuable resource to be delivered.

WASH – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Rotary New Zealand World Community Service have many activities, large and small awaiting a sponsor club or individual. Matching funds available in some cases.
