21st May Guest Speakers Halford Shaw & Rob Swale
Rob and his wife Kate are the owners of Fiordland Discover. Rob Swale's family arrived in Fiordland in 1792 (William Leith) and have been fishing or farming in Fiordland/Southland ever since. Rob has commercially fished for Blue Cod and Crayfish in Fiordland as well as running a fishing charter business with his old boat the "Jewel" . Three years ago they built their new boat the Fiordland Jewel. The Fiordland Jewel operates out of Milford Sound in the summer months, September to April catering to the high end tourist market and in winter it does multi day cruises through Fiordland and Stewart Island aimed primarily to the NZ market.
Hal Shaw is long time old tourism hack and past Queenstown Rotarian. He worked for Real Journeys for many years and his association with Milford sound goes back to the early 90s. Hal and his wife Jane own Provisions of Arrowtown and the Boat Shed Cafe although Hal prefers mucking around with boats rather than mucking around in kitchens, hence his association with Fiordland Discovery.
Yesterday I was lucky enough to fly up to Roys Peak to view the new solar panels that power the repeater tower up there. Last year Rotary donated some money to help with the replacement of the currant power source which had reached the end of its life. The radio tower is used by a number of companies (including Ridgeline Adventures) also Search and rescue. The radio tower would be a vital link in a major emergency. They have spent approximately $300000 on the upgrade and Rotary were just one of the organisations that contributed money. Since September last year they have only had to use the backup generators for 83hours which they are very pleased with. The flight up there and to see what they had done was a way to say thank you for the donation from Wanaka Rotary.
On Thursday the 9th the club run a very successful quiz night at the Golf course. Many thanks to Deans and his team of workers. In total we raised $8825 and with the partnership Rotary has with the Gates Foundation that equates to $26475 to go towards the eradication of Polio.
A couple of reminders. On the 28th we are going to Amigos in support of Kahu Youth so no meeting at District club that night. And please everyone remember to register for the Changeover evening on the 22nd of June at Cardrona Hotel.
See you at Rotary on Tuesday
Regards, President George

Quiz Night 9 May 2019
The quiz night was a success from the point of view that those that went enjoyed themselves and it raised to date net income of $8,675. It was a team effort and my thanks to those that helped in the set-up and gathered prizes together and donated there time and goods to fill the Raffle Hamper. Lois and Ian, Rosie, Duncan, George S, and George R, Lloyd, Nicola, Brian, Chris W, George Smyth, Dave McKenzie, Jenny Milburn to name a few.
We made $5,055 on the Auction items and for this we have to thank the generosity of Fiordland Discovery, Chris Wright and Latin Link, Maude Wines, Mitre 10, Summit Collective, Bella Wanaka, Paper Plus, Cardrona Distillery and The Bakery for the donated savouries. Quizmaster George was his normal Best and made the evening and the program flow.
Thanks to all who put together a team and filled the Golf Club to capacity and bid on the Auction items.
The money raised will go to the eradication of Polio and as you know each dollar raised will be gat $2 from the Gates Foundation so $26,000 was effectively raised on the night.
This could be a yearly fixture.
Foundation Chair , Deans Hudson.
Dr Andrew McLeod- Cycling from Lands End to John O Groats Speaker 14 May
Local GP Andrew McLeod entertained members with an account of his recent cycle tour from Lands End to John o’ Groats in the UK. – Reminding us that John O’ Groats is much further north than our Bluff is south.
A passion for cycling in the family, and experience on other overseas cycle tours, made the adventure a must on his bucket list. With 850 riders and 150 support crew the event was a major logistical exercise, and very well planned organized. Riders averaged approx 100 miles per day ! – off the main highways, thru the country lanes and small villages of England, Wales and Scotland. All with their own inherent beauty. They traveled at their own pace, with accommodation and meals provided by way of tents and marquees at each check point along the way - this itself a huge exercise with literally an army of tents. Andrew personally opted for the for the more comfortable option, staying in local inns and country pubs.
Andrew described the event was a serious exercise in personal fitness and stamina, and a huge achievement for all.
He impressed with his dedication and commitment to the sport, showing what can be achieved “when you really set your mind to do something”
Question time was led by the inimitable John Milburn

Rotary Down Under Magazine Digital Subscription - Let's save the planet one magazine at a time!
We now have more than 1500 subscribers receiving the electronic edition of Rotary Down Under and the list continues to grow every day.
It may come as a shock to some, but there are actually Rotary Down Under subscribers who don't bother to read their monthly magazine. If you know one of them, why not let them know that they no longer have to carry it from the letterbox to the recycling bin and that Rotary Down Under subscriptions can be ordered online for those who don't want the hard copy magazine clogging up their letterboxes or contributing to our environmental problems.
Feedback has been extremely positive and it costs no more. Why not take the electronic edition and give a hard copy edition to your guest speaker, or to your local doctor's surgery or solicitor's waiting room? Some clubs have already taken the decision to take their subscriptions completely online, while maintaining delivery of half a dozen hard copies to give away for public relations purposes.
It is still a condition of your Rotary Membership that you subscribe to an approved Rotary Magazine. However, if you and your life partner/wife/husband/de-facto/significant other or even your Rotarian son or daughter or Rotarian brother or sister live at the same address, you are no longer required to take two or multiple subscriptions.
These conditions must be met!
If you elect to take a digital subscription, you will have to provide us with your email address. Under no circumstances will we pass that information on to any third party.
Email traffic from us to you will be limited to delivery of the magazine in the form of link from an email once a month, along with e-newsletters such as this one occasionally when important Rotary issues arise, such as disaster relief appeals like the Queensland floods in 2011 or the Christchurch earthquakes.
As subscription to a magazine is a condition of your Rotary membership, we will require advice from your club secretary that you are no longer a Rotarian or that you have taken up a subscription with The Rotarian magazine before we can delete your details from our email database. You will not be allowed to "unsubscribe" from the service unless we hear from your club secretary to the effect already mentioned. If you do try to unsubscribe, we have no choice under the terms of our licence with Rotary International but to restore your details to the printed edition database.
The price of an electronic subscription will be the same as a hard copy subscription. Apart from the expense of providing and continually updating the software required to keep the electronic services provided by Rotary Down Under, it should be remembered that we are still committed to providing a hard copy to everyone who requires it. This means that while the number of people opting into the electronic version can be expected to gradually increase, thereby diminishing the actual print-run of the hard copy edition, we will still have a significant print-run that will remain in all likelihood for many years to come. We are therefore producing two types of magazine and bearing the cost of two production systems. There will, no doubt, be savings on the production of the hard copy edition in time, but these savings will be more than offset by the cost of keeping technologically up to date. Our commitment to you is that when we reach a critical mass of digital subscribers, we will adjust the subscription price accordingly.
If you wish to opt into an exclusively Digital Subscription, email: subscriptions@rotarydownunder.com.au to notify us now with the words "Digital Subscription" in the subject line and advise your name, email, club and District information.
