Tuesday 20 November 2018 - THIS WEEKS MEETING WILL START AT 6.15pm on the dot!

On Tuesday we had Colin Sharp share some of his stories about his life in Gore before moving to Wanaka. There were a number of events that he mentioned that I remembered. If I am correct there are 4 members who have lived in Gore at some stage of their lives.

Peter Borrie also spoke briefly about Prostate Cancer. He was encouraging all male members to have regular check-ups. Both my Father and brother have had Prostate cancer and I have regular PSA tests and have had scans and biopsies. So please all you male Rotarians go have that check-up.

Yesterday while out on a trip with Ridgeline Adventures I was talking about my involvement with Rotary and a guest mentioned she was a past Rotary exchange student. She had gone from New South Wales to near New York back in 1974. She talked about the positive effect it had on her life but also about how the exchange had not always been easy. She mentioned in her day she would post a letter to her family back in Australia and it may be 20 days later she would get a reply whereas today the students with modern communications were able to talk or message their families whenever they wanted. We talked about how it would be a much different experience today.

I often meet people out on our trips who are Rotarians or have family who have been Rotarians. It is one of the great things about Rotary in that you are part of a worldwide family and no matter where you go around the world you will find people with similar values to yourself.

Next Tuesday while we will meet at the Golf Club as normal, after our meal we will go down to LandSar and they will tell us a little about what they do and how they operate.

We are still having a number of members who do not appear to be putting in an apology on time. If you are having trouble putting in an apology please contact me.

Have a good weekend and see you on Tuesday

The Gathering of The Geezers

On the evening of Thursday 22nd November 2018 The Gathering of The Geezers Dinner will be held at the Warbirds and Wheels museum at the airport.

This is a sold out event where individuals have paid $350 a head to attend.  You do not need to be a “petrol head” to enjoy this night out.  All funds raised from the event go out to the local Search and Rescue team and to the Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust.  Currently Noeline Harridge is the chair of the UCCMT and Dave Evans and Derek Valentine are members.

The UCCMT gives out thousands of dollars every year to families in our area that are struggling financially and who have children with significant health issues.

We are after some volunteers to help on the night from 4-30 pm till about 10 pm with setting up, serving food, bar work and clearing tables.   You do get well fed and get to participate in a great evening with huge benefits to our community.

If anyone can assist please contact Dave Evans (0279103892)  or Derek Valentine (021796077).

many thanks Dave Evans
