Presidents Report 4th November 2024

It's Monday, this must be Queenstown! I'm currently guiding three generations of a Singaporean family group (oldest is 85) of nine around the lower half of the South Island. We arrived at a rainy/sleety Mt Cook on Saturday night after no sign of the mountain as we drove around the end of Lake Pukaki. But after about 60mm of snow overnight, pictured is what I woke up to yesterday:

After Queenstown it's up the West Coast, and from Greymouth back to Christchurch, then home late Saturday.

Meantime, a very warm welcome to the club for Roger Hamilton, and the shortest turnaround ever for the delivery of a new member profile talk. Our members have some amazing stories to share, and Roger's was no exception; beginning for Roger in the mid 1800's with some pretty hardy ancestors, until now, with Roger split between continuing farming interests and life in Wanaka.

Rotary life continues - best wishes to the punters tomorrow at B.Social; and for those helping at the Duck Race on Saturday, take a moment to notice the joy you are helping create for all the kids following the race. The money raised helps us do much good, but the fun for those following the race shouldn't be forgotten. And of course, last weekend a large contingent traversed some of Otago's high country tracks - I'm very much looking forward to hearing how it went, and the sharing of some inevitable 'stories'.

Then click up on the Notifications Report tab that pops up.

At that stage you'll be asked to Login to ClubRunner, the club management software we use. You'll need your user name ( probably "Firstname.Familyname.13202" unless you've had Julian Warren give you something else) and your password to Login - there are forgot password and forgot username options, or Webmaster Julian will be able to help.

Once logged in, a page called Reports Apologies and Guest Notifications will pop up

On the last line you'll see tabs to either view the report document, or to download PDF file - and there you will see what's recorded for all of us, including you.

Roger was welcomed to Wanaka Rotary by President Alan and Membership Committee member Sally Angus. Roger then introduced himself with a presentation of his background as a Winton farmer, family man, sportsman, fisherman, tourist of challenging places and a person who embraces positive change. Thank you for your presentation Roger and welcome to our Club.

Roger's final word is worthy of a parting thought.

"Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving".

October 22nd Vocational Visit to new Coastguard building.

Wanaka Rotary Honorary member Jonathan Walmisley introduced his team and gave assembled Rotarians a rundown of the new Coastguard premised and their rescue craft Waiariki Rescue. This twin-engine 9m vessel is one of 26 high-spec craft that were first used as chase boats at the 2021 America’s Cup. Jonathan also drew our attention to their new FUSO Canter 7164 four-wheel-drive. After time onboard the Waiariki Rescue and a tour around the new Headquarters, Jonathan highlighted two pieces of information for the boaties of us.

Firstly a contact number which will immediately patch people to the Coastguard Wanaka Centre for urgent information, and a Coastguard app to assist in planning and logging trips with the Coastguard service and as a source of local weather conditions and forecasts.

At the same venue and time we were fortunate to be addressed by District Governor Dave McKissock. Dave explained that "The Magic of Rotary" symbol will now become permanent due to the yearly cost internationally of changing in annually. He also presented a slide of the International President Stephanie Urchick's 2024-2025 4 step action plan ( below). Dave then went on the present District 9999's "Looking to the Future - the 4 C's slide (below) and explained his own 9 step "Aspirations for Clubs" (below). Thank you Dave for the very informative presentation and update which we will involve us all in the near future.

The was actually held on Wednesday 23rd October at Helen's magnificent new house off Mills Road backing onto Sticky Forest. A select few of Rotarians enjoyed snacks, beverages and each others company for a special evening. Thank you to Helen for hosting this.

3 day Rotary 4 wheel drive trip to Danseys Pass and Lawrence.

A full trip summary will be forthcoming in the next bulletin from Ken (the new "Hoonigan") Goldfinch, however below are some photographs from day 1 - Wanaka, Nevis Station to Waikeria via the Old Dunstan Trail. The drive of the day must be awarded to Duncan "The Bozz" Boswell who wheeled his small hybrid Toyota through the obstacles; 4 up with all the aplomb of a professional rally driver.
