To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
No meeting at The Albie tomorrow - it's committee meetings this week. Hopefully you've heard from your Director and are able to attend. The following week, 15th October, it's the Polio+ fundraiser night - we have a theatre at Paradiso booked out for us to see the movie Thelma along with partners and friends - please sign-up by paying $25 per person into the club's Westpac account # 03-1739-0149617-000 and noting both your name and 'Movie' or 'Thelma' in the particulars fields.
In between, on the 12th and 13th, a group of members and friends (still recruiting for more) will travel west, cross the mighty Matukituki River, traverse some wild farmland and arrive at an oasis: Tititea Lodge, where they will eat, drink and be merry - in between spurts of activity to ready the facility for the mostly youth groups that will use it as a base for outdoor education, through until autumn next year.
All this follows, by all accounts, a fun night of bowls, raffles, pizza and cheap drinks at the Wanaka Bowling Club last week. I understand from selector John, that he noticed the unexploited skills of a few members, and gathered that some may get a wee tap on the shoulder, as plans develop for winter bowls next year. Several more optional fun nights are being planned by the Social Activities Committee (thank you), most of them things we'd never organise or do on our own, but as a group it becomes both feasible and enjoyable. And start thinking about your favourite nationality in the world; and what that means for you when choosing your attire for the Club Christmas Party on December 7th.
Later in this Bulletin, you will see copied a message from ex RYE student Wyn Bachler - he's hoping to come to New Zealand to undertake, as part of his degree, an internship with either an Engineering or Business focus. September 24th. Dean Dunning and Hannah Einam: Wanaka Solar.
Dean is incredibly passionate about the solar industry and making a difference to the planet. His deep care for the environment and commitment to sustainability took a new direction when he moved to Wanaka. Noticing the abundance of sunshine and the lack of solar panels on roofs, Dean saw an opportunity to merge his passion for renewable energy with his qualifications. This led to the founding of Wanaka Solar. Driven by a desire to make a positive impact, Dean and Hannah took us through the process of designing and the placement of solar systems, the approximate costs and benefits. An interesting talk.

Workshop for new club members
The Membership Cttee is planning a workshop for new members of our club. It will be at Pat Heffernan’s home,
18 Mt Nicholas Ave on the afternoon of Sunday Oct 20, 1.45pm - 4pm. The purpose is to give new members some more
introductory information about Rotary internationally, across NZ and in our district. There will also be lots of time for
questions. Members who have joined in the last little while will have received a personal invite, however we know that there
could be others who would like to come along for their own interest. We would welcome your attendance. Please call

A message from RYE student Wyn Bachler.
Hello Dear Members of the Wanaka Rotary Club! This is Wyn Bachler, I was a Rotary exchange student in Wanaka in 2019/20, I hope that some of you might remember me. I was Deborah Budden's host son for a while (Hi Deb!). It has been about 4 and a half years since I had to leave NZ early due to Covid and didn't get to formally say goodbye to all of you. But I just wanted to let you know that I had an absolute blast and really enjoyed my time in Wanaka. I remember it fondly as one of the best years of my life. I wanted to thank you for making this possible and being an amazing host club! I've kept in touch with some members, such as Ian and Eliza Rutherford who recently visited me and my family in Germany. I've also taken on the role of vice president of Rotex 1810, my district's Rotex club. We act as confidants and youth leaders for other future and current Rotary exchange students from all around the world! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to return to NZ but I am planning on doing so! After abruptly ending my exchange, I went on to finish school and am currently studying Business Administration and Mechanical Engineering at Uni in my third year. Now, right before finishing my bachelor’s and since I've grown tired of professors talking about final exams, I am on the lookout for something more practical. I am about to start an internship here in Germany which should be really interesting, but then I thought: I know a place halfway across the world that I enjoyed heaps, why not look for something there? So this is my question: Me and a friend from Uni are looking for an internship in the area of Engineering and/or Business (finance, strategy, consulting, management) from February 2025, ideally between 3 and 5 months (not necessarily in Wanaka). Any help of any kind is greatly appreciated. I hope to see you all soon and make a visit to Wanaka and NZ soon. 1. Foundation event on 10 December will be run by Don Irvine since Tony is resigning.
2. Interest in supporting some international fundraisers. Elaine has contacted Candace
Bangura, Global Grant Advisor, from Invercargill for more information - yet to hear back.
3. Directors agreed the Zone 8 conference (Queenstown) and the Rotary International
conference (Calgary, Canada) should be included in the Club runner events.
4. Pres. Alan agreed to allow regular updates from each director at each meeting - about what

Gibbston Valley Concert – 18 January 2025
1. John H reported at this stage may only need a further 7-8 volunteers.
2. In addition, we have been asked if we can provide 7 shuttle drivers based out of
Queenstown. We have asked the Rotaract club if they can assist but they can’t.

SERVICE PROJECTS: Nicola Brown
Funding Applications reviewed
1. George Tucker (11yrs old) – Applied for $1,000.00 to represent NZ in Kart sport at this
year's ROK Super final in Italy. He is an inspirational young local boy. Recommend a grant.
2. RYDA/Road Safety Education Ltd – Highlands Park Cromwell, March 2025, Programme
Applied for $2,000.00 to subsidise 182 MAC students to attend. Note this is an increase
from 100 to 182 students from this year. Recommend a grant.
3. Aspiring Athletics – $1,619.00 to purchase timing equipment. Have applied to Central
Otago Trust. The junior club has 150 athletes ranging from 6-14. Recommend a grant.
General
1. Duncan Boswell has followed up all the 2023/2024 grant applications (excluding Lake
Hawea Community Centre – John Milburn to report back). All grant applicants have done
what they set out to do. Hunter Burke is available to speak at a meeting in September.
2. 40th Anniversary for Rotary Club of Wanaka Dinner. It was noted from all committee
members that it was too expensive. Also, that members felt pressured to attend.
3. Clean-up NZ – It was agreed to join/supplement the efforts of Wai Wanaka.
4. Review of Grant Application and Guidelines. Nicola and Deans are to work together on
this and will report back to directors. Pres. Alan noted that this should be run past the
Regulations Committee for consistency.
5. Tititea Lodge Working Bee Weekend – October 12-13.
6. Blennerhasset Memorial Lookout Chair - John M reported that progress has been made
with a concrete base poured and stonemasons having made a start. Some hands-on help
from Rotarians will probably be needed as the project progresses.
YOUTH and VOCATION: Bernadette Frost for Nikki Carey
1. Speech Competition
The competition was won by Josh Moody, who spoke about life as a teenager; the judges
declared Zoe Laws and Elsa Buckley to be 2nd= placegetters.
2. MAC Tertiary Scholarship
Six shortlisted candidates were interviewed on Friday 23rd August. A winner has been
chosen.
3. KAHU Youth Scholarship
We are awaiting news from Kahu Youth on whether they have found a candidate for our
scholarship (to interview) but as yet no word.
4. Vocation
A visit to Coastguard’s facilities is planned for 22nd October.

General Business
1. The Woman’s Health Bus will be in attendance, and using their new PCR machine, at the
annual Merino Shearing Competition in Alexandra over 4th & 5th October
2. Money recently paid to the club by non-apology / non-attending members, has been
transferred to The Albie.
3. Looking for club member feedback on some (or many) being interested in helping at the
Wilding Tree group monthly working bees.
4. As a result of Mud-trap filters funded by us, Wai Wanaka now has much useful data on
what types of waste are in Wanaka’s stormwater. Data is going into a national database.

Annual Wanaka and Aspiring Rotary Combined Tititea Lodge Clean up Weekend
When: 12-13 October
What: Getting the lodge all ready for the summer school camps from Mount Aspiring College and Dunstan High (and others). General maintenance, gardening, simple repairs, cutting and splitting firewood etc.
Typically it costs around $35 per person for food for the weekend. There is always an amazing evening meal on the Saturday evening. Partners, kids also welcome.
We normally leave Wanaka around 8am, on the Saturday and carpool and normally leave the lodge just after lunch on Sunday. There is an option to just come for the for the Saturday if you can’t stay the night.
Bring warm clothes, sleeping bag, pillow case, chainsaw (if you have one), and something to drink in the evening.
Rotary have been involved with the Lodge for many years and is great to keep this continuing. Alexandra and Milton Rotary also have a weekend there. Alexandra do the close up just before Winter and Milton run guided tramping trips.
