To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
Sue Svensson, our District Rotary Community Leader (RCL), is organising a joint meeting for the 5 local Rotary Clubs at the new Te Puna Mahara - Cromwell Memorial Event Centre on Tuesday, February 23. While we are still finalising the details, we are excited about the opportunity to have a great turnout, so please mark your calendars. DG Sandra Isaacs has confirmed she will be joining us.
We had a great visit to our fire station last Tuesday! The facility is impressive, and our volunteers are truly amazing. A big thank you to John Milburn for organising. The gathering afterward at Monkey Farm was well attended, and there were plenty of great conversations shared.
There are still a few spots available for our fellowship night with Queenstown Rotary at the Cardrona Hotel on 24 November so please signup. This evening is a wonderful chance for us to connect with each other and strengthen our community.
Our Club Xmas Auction night will be held on Tuesday 8 December so please get behind this fun night at the Albie. See the information below from the organising team.
Our annual Rotary fishing trip at Makarora is happening from November 22 to 24, and we can't wait to see who will win the prize for the most Impressive fish. Here’s hoping there is no controversy!
Ron and Tony have made a fantastic start on our new Bulletin. Theres still a lot more to accomplish, but the examples I've seen so far look fantastic and will definitely reduce work significantly.
Minutes from the monthly meetings of the Board of Directors are accessible to all members. To request a copy, please email our secretary using the link found in the notice at the bottom of our Bulletin.
Finally, every act of service, no matter how small, creates a ripple of hope.
If you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please contact me.
Ngā mihi,
Geoff

About Me
I was born in the UK, but after traveling extensively through Europe, Asia and Australasia and working a variety of jobs including as a Chef, a Lifeguard, and teaching English in the foothills of the Himalayas - I made New Zealand my home in 2002 and settled in Wanaka in 2009. My family and I love the amazing outdoors and enjoy all the water based activities this area as to offer, especially sailing and kayaking. I have a BA from Bath Spa University, UK and a BEd from Massey University, NZ, and have spent over 15 years teaching in Early Childhood and Primary settings in both the North and South Island before retraining and immersing myself in the wonderful world of Child-Centered Play Therapy.
Previous meeting Highlights
October 20th: Wanaka Fire Station vocational visit
The brigade’s station opened in 2016 after relocating from the old Macpack shop, and it was built with resilience in mind, including space for a large generator trailer that could power the station and charge trucks. The station has a kitchen, equipment, food, and bottled water support for about two weeks of brigade operations; that self-sufficiency plan is aimed at sustaining brigade activity rather than serving as a wider community support hub, although the station could potentially become an emergency-services command hub during a major event. Water was still noted as a possible constraint.
The brigade reported 207 calls from January 1 through the meeting date, including 10 vegetation events, 43 miscellaneous fire calls, 4 weather-related events, 18 medicals, 50 MDAs, and 45 alarm activations, though the transcript did not fully clarify the MDA category or reconcile every count. Vehicle crashes requiring attendance occur about two or three times a month, and extrication equipment is needed about once every two months. The brigade covers a broad area, including the Crown Range, Lindis Pass saddle, Cromwell, Queensberry, and nearby locations, and it provides crash-rescue cutting gear to surrounding rural brigades. Fire, police, and search and rescue are nearby, but ambulance service is not based at the site.
The brigade has 30 operational members, all volunteers, organized into four duty crews. Each crew includes at least one driver, two breathing-apparatus wearers, and an officer, with crews rotating one week on and three weeks off; members may also respond outside their assigned duty week. A minimum turnout is four people, and volunteers are alerted by paging and a siren. Medical calls are increasingly common, the brigade may arrive before St John’s when ambulance crews are transporting patients to Dunstan, and a regional helicopter can sometimes arrive within about five minutes.
Many thanks to Luke and Phil from the Wanaka Fire Station for hosting us.

Get dressed up, have some fun with your outfit, and join in the spirit of the occasion. It’s always a popular night and a great laugh.
Any questions just ask any of the Rotarians who have come in previous years.
Wānaka Search and Rescue (SAR) will be the beneficiary of all the funds raised from the Corporate Duck Entries in this year's Duck Race Fundraiser. These funds will go towards a sonar for SAR’s recently acquired remotely operated vehicle (ROV) as pictured below.
"And look what I found"
The sonar, with a budgeted cost of $45k, will allow the ROV to see in very dark or murky water to a depth of 500 metres.

Club Xmas Auction 2026 Tuesday December 8 th is our Club Xmas Auction night, our fundraising evening
when 70% goes towards our obligation to
the Rotary Foundation. This is Rotary’s own charity that contributes funds towards
Rotary Projects world-wide.
This year we are making a few subtle changes to the format in an attempt to make it
a more enjoyable evening for everyone.
The venue is the Albie Tavern on Tuesday 8th December.
The evening will begin at 5.30pm when you can socialise prior to a meal.
We will start the auction at 7.15pm.
An auction list will be circulating at meetings but please phone Don Irvine 0212361518 or
Peter Harridge 021570889 with your item ASAP. This year all items need to be notified to us by Tuesday 1st December, which is our AGM.
We cannot accept items on the night as it tends to prolong the evening and clog the
system.
Please phone Peter, Don, Dave Brewer or Dave Evans to collect items beforehand,
or bring them early on the night of the auction.
We are encouraging you all to think quality items and the aim is to auction around
60 quality items.
The night should be a little shorter than last year and we will have a second professional
auctioneer to assist Dave McKenzie.
Wine, Xmas cakes, vouchers, Xmas Hampers, spirts, home baking, holiday homes,
boat trips, home meals/BBQ etc etc are always popular.
Already we have three premium items for auction including - One round of golf for 4 at Wanaka Golf Course – value $500
- 2 paintings by well known artist Susie Ruddenklau
- 1 framed photo from our own ‘Landscape photographer’ – Ken Goldfinch
