To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
Yet again John and Nicole Huddleston made a great job of organising the Gibbston Valley Concert volunteers on Saturday – they always have things so well prepared and have everyone settled into their duties in good time before the “hordes” arrive. Well done and thank you to John and Nicole on behalf of us all.
With only a single exception, I thoroughly enjoyed every part of being there. I find it really great to chat briefly and have a bit of banter with the crowd as they come onto the ground. I was at the main road and had all the Queenstown car park customers come past me – a large number of whom were out of
breath having to climb from the flats by the river up to the concert!! I had to tell quite a few
that we had no oxygen available, despite their pleading! Thanks to Mike (Marie’s other half!) for sharing the duties with me and making it an even more interesting time.
I sent an email to all members asking for help on this coming Saturday – the 18 th – to move firewood and get some of it split. If you can help from about 9am then please let me know so that we can also organise cups of tea and lunch. Utes and trailers would be most useful too. It will be weather dependant of course, so a cancellation will be sent out on Friday evening if necessary. The poplar wood is very dry so won’t need much additional drying
time to be ready for sale. I will contact through the week all positive responses with where we will be meeting on Saturday morning.
Tomorrow – Tuesday – is a non-meeting night, so perhaps a committee meeting could beheld in preparation for the first Director’s meeting of the year
next Monday night at the A&P Office on the Showgrounds.
Shorter report this week as the Editor is running out of room!!
President Mike.

Club Night Activities
Elaine Kelly- our latest Wanaka Rotarian
A warm welcome to Elaine who was inducted into our Club by President Mike at our last Tuesday night meeting.
Elaine is pictured with Club Membership Director Pat Heffernan, Dr Peter Borrie and President Mike Elliot
Sarah-Kate began her talk with a recruiting drive so if anyone has a free day?
She talked about how her parents set up the vineyard in 1994 on Maungawera Road. The land slopes North facing with a 35-45 degree slope allowing for free draining and minimising frost effect. Sarah-Kate admitted she enjoyed some Chateau Carboard wine at University before she completed an undergraduate degree at Lincoln. From there it was overseas and finally to the Hunter Valley Australia where she met husband Dan.
They came back to New Zealand and Wanaka in 2005; began expanding the business and in her words had a great 2008 summer when clients and contracts began to line up. The GFC then hit their business and they had to work their way slowly out.
By 2010 volumes were under control and their Reisling won prizes in 2010 and 2104. In 2017 they won a National award with their Pino Noir and then won best New Zealand Wine with their Pion Noir.
A grest story and thanks the Sarah-Kate for a very interesting talk.
Guest Speaker Tuesday 31st January: Alan Rose
Alan is the resident Club Professional at the Wanaka Golf Club and a member of the NZ Professional Golf Association. Alan was known to some of us as the man behind "Sharpies Golf Shop" in Dunedin before he relocated to Wanaka in 2016.
He gave us an insight into his daily routine at Wanaka, running the shop and apparently imparting some free advice on the driving range from time to time. Alan informed members that the Wanaka Golf Club has the highest membership in the South Island (approx 1300 members) and in the top 10 in the Country.
He also mentioned the Covid has had a positive effect on membership around the world and gave an insight into the PGA vs LIV golf split and it's effect on the top golf tier.
With your Editor's assistance, Alan could write a book beginning with Chapter 1: "How to properly line up your fourth putt" and Chapter 4: " How to get more distance off a shank". For the other 19 chapters please see the Editor.
Christopher Porter: Visitor from the Hexam Rotary Club of England.
Christopher who is visiting New Zealand gave us a quick rundown of his Hexam Club and their activities. It is a small club of 40 members with 30-35 being active. They run a Jazz festival during the summer which raises 4000-5000 Pound Sterling. This and other fund raising is channelled into Environmental projects including tree planting and assisting schools with EV purchasing.
Christopher himself is an Engineer and he took the opportunity to present our Club with a Hexham Banner. President Mike and the Editor have Christopher's contact details if any member wishes to make contact with him.

"I talk about ROMAC history, how it works, who we help, what treatments are offered, where treatment is offered, what countries we serve, why we need money and the current situation post Covid shut down.
I am a retired Registered Nurse with an interest in supporting people who would never have the opportunity to get treatment. I have been to Vanuatu 3 times so have seen first hand the difficult logistics it takes to get these kids fixed."

Wood Splitting and Transport
Dear All,
I have at last been able to work out a day for us to sort some of the wood that has accumulated over the last few months.
Saturday 18th February - a week tomorrow - is the day for all who can come and help - weather dependant of course.
We have wood on both sides of Orchard Road to work on, but I would prefer to get the stuff on the North side sorted first. So, utes and trailers would be appreciated for those who have them.
The poplar is very dry, so will be available for sale this year - some of the rest may be slightly too damp, but time will tell!
Start time will be 9am. and lunch will be provided - possibly even a cuppa mid-morning!!
Let me know if you can make it - then I know how many snaggers to buy!
Hope to see lots of you there.
President Mike

Our District has been approached by the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ seeking volunteer assistance for their major Wanaka fundraiser, The NZ House and Garden tour.
Sadly they are experiencing difficulties in recruiting enough volunteers to make the event the success they require.
The event is planned for Friday 24 and Saturday 25 February in Wanaka and people travel from far and wide to attend, providing the Breast Cancer Foundation with much needed funds.
Attached for your information is a summary of what is required and how to go about becoming involved.
We hope that your club is able to become involved in this event and while it is short notice, we are sure that any assistance you can give will be crucial in making this event a success for the Breast Cancer Foundation .
We suggest your volunteers register direct with the Breast Cancer Foundation using the link in the attachment.
If you have any questions or queries please contact Carol Roche from the Breast Cancer Foundation whose details are at the bottom of the attachment, or Russell Wallace from the Rotary Club of Waimate russ.wallace1@gmail.com Tel 027 668 8563.
A Note on the Family Support Programme
I believe your organisation is aware of the Community Networks/LINK Family Support Programme, a volunteer-based service supporting local families in the Upper Clutha. The first round of the service has gone really well and we are now looking for more volunteers to help our young families with companionship and household tasks. The commitment is two hours a week and we match volunteers with a family for a minimum of six weeks, so that a trusting and mutually beneficial relationship can be established.
We would be very grateful if you would please share the attached flyer, or the linked job description, within your networks and ask anyone interested to please get in touch with me.
