Tuesday 9 October 2018 -

This coming Tuesday we have the District Governor coming as our Guest Speaker. Mary and I are having him for lunch and talk about everything that has been happening with Rotary in Wanaka. During the afternoon I am taking him out to West Wanaka Station to show him what I do when not busy with Rotary. It will also be a good opportunity to talk about many of the great tourist businesses in Wanaka that may be of interest to The Professional Development group from Tasmania if they were to come to Wanaka. There are also some great innovative agriculture things happening in the area. The Directors are also meeting with the DG before the meeting on Tuesday.

Thank you Trevor for a fantastic night of Jazz on Sunday night, I like all the members who were there enjoyed a night of music, dancing and socializing. We could see how much you were enjoying the music and playing for us Trevor, a big thank you to you and your fellow band members.

We are now approaching a very busy time in October with firstly the Book sale a major fundraiser. Mike Elliot and a team of workers have been working away sorting books over the past months. They were looking for people to help with the sale weekend so if you have time please volunteer. Also that weekend we have the Koru Tri which Don and Deans and their team have been organising. I understand sales have been going well but there are still a number of tickets available if you want to go. This will be the first time Mary and I will have been to a concert like this. Next we have the Duck Race on Labour weekend. This is again a major fundraiser and this year I have managed to sell a Corporate Duck to Ridgeline Adventures and three other ducks to tourist companies that work together with Ridgeline. I have offered a bottle of wine from CJ Pask where my son in law is the wine maker to the winner out of these three companies. (a race within a race)

The proposed new club, Aspiring Rotary, held their launch event last week and it was great to hear a good number of people attended. It is looking positive that they will be able to form a club as the District Governor has been advised that they have more than 20 members signed up.  Aspiring Rotary are keeping the District Governor informed of developments.

Look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, and have a great weekend and go the All Blacks (Deans who are you cheering for)?

District 9980 Car Rally and Fun (Track) Day

HIGHLANDS MOTORSPORTS PARK, CORNER SH6 AND SANDFLAT ROAD, CROMWELL
Calling All 9980 Clubs.

Fill up as many cars as you can with your club members, family and friends. Car rally to Cromwell in the morning, plenty of routes to get you there so plan some fun stops on the way.

BBQ lunch starts at 12.30pm (courtesy of Cromwell Rotary), take your car on and around the Highlands circuit starting from 1pm, and enjoy some great Fellowship and meet some Great Rotarian's and their guests.

$10 Per person for lunch and $20 entry fee per car with all proceeds after expenses to go to Rotary Projects.

Then maybe try a wine tasting or two once done at the many vineyards in the area or just enjoy Sunny Central to your hearts content.
Highlands have lots to do and see, so maybe a friendly grudge match on the go-karts or a blast around the track in a Ferrari.
The Hamilton Cup is up for grabs for the best turned out AG's area so get your thinking caps on and race gear organised.

DG Andrew says:

This year the District is holding a “Fun Day”. Because our Rotary District covers a large area, we don’t all get together very often. This is a social day, an opportunity to catch up with old friends and make some new friends from members of other Rotary Clubs. The more we all get to know each other, the more contacts we each have amongst our Rotary Clubs and the more we can all achieve both locally and globally, and of course the more fun we can have on the way!

The Assistant Governors have made a wonderful job of organising the day. Please feel free to bring family and friends. Barbara and I look forward to seeing everyone in Cromwell – and maybe on the racetrack!!

PLEASE LET YOUR PRESIDENT KNOW IF YOU ARE COMING ALONG AND HOW MANY WILL BE IN YOUR VEHICLE SO WE CAN PLAN THE CATERING.

FINAL NUMBERS NEEDED BY 5pm on FRIDAY THE 2ND OF NOVEMBER

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

The opportunity that changed my life

Posted on

Jireh Mabamba, second from left, with members of Rotaract in Minnesota.

By Jireh Mabamba

Sometimes, all you need is a chance – that one opportunity of a lifetime. Rotary gave me that chance.

I grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where human life has little value. Children are taken from their families and forced into the army, women are raped daily, and men are killed in front of their loved ones. Massacre is the norm. The only way to survive this brutal environment is to flee the country, and when I was nine, that’s what my family and I did.

We moved to South Africa, a country that was foreign to us on so many levels. The language and the currency were different. We knew no one. Of the few people that showed us kindness, most were Rotarians. They came forward and helped us when we needed it most. At that time, I knew nothing about Rotary. In 2007, Rotary Youth Exchange students from Australia, France, Germany, and the U.S. came to my school for their year abroad and it was through them that I truly became interested in Rotary.

I learned about fellowship, the value of friendship, and what it means to serve. The more I learned of the work of the Rotary Club of Durban Berea, the more my interest grew. When I completed high school, Rotary International gave me the opportunity to be an exchange student in Duluth, Minnesota, USA.

My life changed in so many ways during my exchange. I grew as a leader by surrounding myself with Rotarians who were leaders of action in their professional field and their community. I contributed to hands-on projects that made immediate impact in the community. When I met other youth exchange students, I was exposed to new cultures, traditions, and languages. My experience built my self-confidence, allowed me to be more globally competent, and it gave me an opportunity to make lifelong friends.

When I returned to Durban, South Africa, after my exchange, I joined the Rotaract Club of Durban Berea to be with people my age who knew the value of serving others. This allowed me to further develop my leadership skills, to network, and to continue having fun with like-minded people.

I was accepted at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, allowing me to return to the U.S. in 2013. I built upon the relationships that I had developed during my exchange year with host families and Rotarians to found the Twin Ports Rotaract Club in Duluth. I started this club because I felt empowered by Rotarians from Durban and Duluth. My goal was to form a group of vibrant and dynamic individuals who enjoy serving their community, a group that does not discriminate based on gender, race, or nationality.

Twin Ports Rotaract has done several service projects in Minnesota, South Africa, and recently in Guatemalan communities. When I look back, I can see how my life has been completely transformed by the generosity of the people I met through the Rotary Youth Exchange program. Today, I am more passionate about empowering others and making a significant impact in the lives of the people I meet because of the Rotarians who took the time and believed in me.
