SPEAKER REPORT
Contestants for Rotary Speech Competition

Every year we are inspired by the sincere dedication of the contestants for the Rotary Speech Competition. Tuesday night was another outstanding example of the high calibre of contestants our 3 adjudicators had to choose one to represent their school at the Rotary District Conference in Dunedin

Sonja Palmer and Hayley Yule did not make it an easy choice

Hayley won first place with her presentation giving us the hard cold facts about Facebook which has over 2 billion monthly users as of 2017 and is worth over half a trillion dollars.

Facebook and some other social media platforms conduct some very unethical research experiments by controlling people’s emotions based on what their news feed showed them. Is it the truth you ask? This top secret psychological experiment on its users was later published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in a scientific journal. And yes, their study discovered it to be true that if all the content on the users feed was negative, then they were most likely to post negative images and visa versa. The data was collected by your likes, the comments made, the names you put in your search bar.

Studied subjects were split into negative feeds and drilled with negative comments thus driving their subjects into a life of misery and gloom. The psychological manipulation that Facebook caused was later documented to create potential mental illness such as depression and anxiety. However the positive feeds displayed outgoing happy behaviour and life was good.

Hayley proved that facebook failed the Four Way Test and suggested we should all think carefully about how much power we give to Facebook

Those who missed this stunning speech can go to Conference to hear her full presentation

Best Wishes Hayley

Sonja came 2nd hard on Hayley’s heals discussing our environment being on the verge of collapse and why . Her research of the developments in the past 50 years were chillingly honest but her passionate inspiration for correcting the mistakes of the past was a deceptively simple solution. She cleverly connected the building of good will and better relationships very positively.

Sonja compared the needs of five year olds to that of a fifty year olds pointing out that as we age we lose the joy of life and creativity with the pursuit of sciences and maths. She reminded us that it is our life and we need to take time to dance.

Both Sonja and Hayley had obviously spent a lot of time preparing for this competition and should be justifiably proud of their efforts

Outward Bound Sir Roy McKenzie Course 2018

Each year, the JR McKenzie Youth Education Fund sponsors young people to attend a 21 day Outward Bound Course.  This year is no different and we are fortunate to have fully funded positions to give away, therefore we are again on the hunt for potential course participants.

The course has changed slightly this year and the J R McKenzie Youth Education Fund is providing funding of $4,025 towards the course cost for 2 young school aged people (aged 16-18) to attend a Mind Body and Soul course at Outward Bound.  The course duration is 21 days and will be held from the 2nd to 22nd of July 2018.  This is a great opportunity for 2 young people from our district to attend.  The selected candidates will need to find their own way to and from Picton.

Ideal candidates would not normally be the head boy or girl of their school or those that may have such an opportunity via another source, but someone who would benefit greatly from attending, who otherwise would not normally get the opportunity to attend.

Can you please share this opportunity with your Youth Committee, the high schools or other youth groups you look after and see if anyone is keen to apply?  If they are, have them complete the attached enrolment form then interview the candidates at a club level to ascertain whether or not they are suitable.  The committee will accept ONE application per club/school for consideration. Applications no later than Friday the 11th of May 2018.  Due to time constraints and the popularity of this Outward Bound opportunity, no late applications will be accepted.

The final 2 candidates will be selected by the District J R McKenzie Youth Education Fund Committee.  The committee’s decision will be based on the written application together with any supporting comments from the school and/or Rotary Club.  The decision of the committee will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Feel free to contact me direct if you require any further information or clarification.

Maddi Frazer received her 500hours volunteering award at Wanaka St. John's on Tuesday. A massive effort from her, and the first Wanaka Cadet to achieve this. Next is the 800hours award and the Grand Prior award. Maddi has helped Wanaka Rotary for several years with different projects and events which all added up to help achieve this, such as Tititea, Rotary park, The Challenge breaky, duck races and many other events. It was Extra special to have Ian Rae here for the presentation who is a Knight of the order of St John.
