UPPER CLUTHA CHILDRENS MEDICAL TRUST QUIZ NIGHT

The Upper Clutha Childrens Medical Trust (check it out on www.uccmedtrust.co.nz and see exactly what we do) is holding a quiz night at the Wanaka Golf Clubhouse at 7 pm on Friday the 13th April 2018.

We are looking for teams of 6 - 8 people with the cost of entry being $15 per person.  You are guaranteed heaps of fun with quiz master George Smyth.  There is a cash bar, supper and outstanding raffle, spot prizes and just 1 auction of an outstanding flight package around Mount Cook.

It would be great if Rotary could put together some teams and come along and support such a great cause.

Please get in touch with Dave Evans or Derek Valentine to get your tickets.

Saturday May 19th 6.00pm

Last year the social committee ran a very successful progressive dinner involving Rotarians and their partners but this year we have decided to revisit an earlier idea which has a mystery element and also allows people to mix with others outside their geographical location.

The idea is that 2 people host a dinner for 4 other mystery guests. This could be a couple or 2 separate people that choose to host together.

The hosts responsibility is to provide the venue and serve a main course .

Each set of 2 guests will be responsible for bringing the starters or dessert and of course refreshments.

The fun part is that the hosts have no idea who is coming to dine and the guests will not know until late that afternoon where they are going.

We are not expecting people to prepare 5 star meals as the whole point of the evening is to meet up with and enjoy the company of other Rotarians and their partners in a different environment.

All you need to do is sign up on the list being circulated at Rotary or ring Pam 021328284 and choose whether you would rather host or be a guest.

The rest will be organised for you and you will be contacted with the necessary details.

Cheers

Social Committee

Tuesday 10th April 2018 - President Fran's Message:

In brief:

Rotary How to Workshop in Dunedin was worth the trip, as I managed to pick up on some finer points of Foundation, especially the amount of money available for District & Global grants, that Peer Support is a Rotary Initiative, that the independent body. Hippo Water Roller https://www.hipporoller.org/water-innovation/ has been embraced by some international Rotary Clubs and is innovative, that the 2019 Conference is in Hamburg 1 – 5 June., that Marquees and other branded Rotary items are available from District for use at club events.

Membership Satisfaction Survey - Results of Survey are due in the next 2 weeks.

Magazine Recycle – At reception.

Mountain Biking Sunday – How about a 9.30am start from the Logcabin, a medium ride approx. 16 – 19kms, some straights and a little hill or 2 then coffee, Double Black Albert Town? See you there!

Guest Speaker Report

Infection and Prevention Control Practitioner, Dunstan Hospital

Topic: Flu Season

Jill is the Infection and prevention disease control practitioner for Dunstan hospital and came to talk to us about “the Flu Season” Jill has been  in this position at Dunstan Hospital for eight year after, in her words, “being in a nursing forever” in both Southland and Alexandra. She came with further illustrious credentials as she is the mother of one of our members Pip Cawthorn.

Jill’s passion for having a yearly flu injection was evident especially for those aged over 65 years of age. She also told us about the up to date strain, which has recently arrived and available, and what flu’s you would be immunised from which are all too scary. So the message received in her well put together presentation is that we need to get our yearly flu injection and especially if we are over 65 and travelling.

It is a pity that when you board a plan to go anywhere that the air cannot be purified of bugs and all passengers be surreptitiously fumigated while they are on their journey so these bugs and viruses don’t spread. This is an opinion rather than what Jill was advocating.

Thank you Jill and thank our members for bringing this important information to us.

April is Maternal and Child Health month!
