ROTARY MONTHLY THEME: March Water and Sanitation Month
A couple of reminders as we start a new month.
Check if you have a duty to do, and if you are unable to do your duty it is your duty to find someone else to do it for you and to inform me of any changes.
Please when going to get your meal please be aware that there are people behind you and if you take a very large helping others may miss out. It may be you who misses out next week. I am talking with the Wanaka District Club about this situation also.
Also at the end of meeting please help the staff at the Wanaka District Club by returning glasses to the bar and plates to the kitchen.
I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday, have a good weekend.
As I listened to Nicko Mannix our speaker last week a lot of different thoughts were going through my mind, in relation to the situation Nicko has found himself in. One could not help but be inspired by his positive attitude to life and his desire to give back to the community. While my neck injuries as a result of a car accident were nowhere near as serious as Nickos, I wondered how I would have dealt with my situation if I had lost the use of my limbs. My next thoughts were around my children and grandchildren and hope they never ended up like Nicko. And then listening to Nicko and what he wanted to achieve in life and his desire to talk to students and inspire them to overcome difficulties many will face at some point in life. Many members spoke to me after the meeting and I believe there is a real desire to support him in some way in the future. Nicko expressed to me his thanks for the opportunity to speak to Rotary and thanked me for the warm reception he received.
At the last Directors meeting the following Donations were approved.
Wanaka Guides and Scouts
$2000 was approved for renovations to their building
Road Safety Education for MAC Students
$1500 was approved for an education day at Highland Park at Cromwell for senior students
Wanaka Riding for Disabled
$638 was approved for riding gear
MAC Rowing Team
$1000 was approved for rowing training
Show weekend is fast approaching and talking with Richard today we still require a few more volunteers to help on both Friday and Saturday, so please if you can spare a few hours on one of these days please put your name down.
If you cannot find the form to volunteer please either see Richard on Tuesday at Rotary or contact him on 0272345594

Lastly can I say it was good to have Tabatha along last week to say thank you for continuing to do the bulletin long after the Aspiring Club was formed. Thank you Tabatha.
Look forward to seeing you all this Tuesday, I hope you have had a good weekend.

Never Give Up - The courageous Nicky Mannix speaker from last week's meeting
On Tuesday night, Nicky Mannix shared his courageous story, with Wanaka Rotarians, of how a youthful, quick decision made on New Year’s Eve, 2014, ,with a new ‘mate’, resulted in his life being changed, along with the impact on his family, forever.
How does one pull through a deliberate act by another to destroy you, leaving you in a coma, in intensive care, a tetraplegic and potentially on a ventilator for life?
Nicky spoke to us of feeling, as he began to recover, ‘like being in a dead body, only the mind working’, as he applied his determination to learn to breathe again hour after hour and day after day so he would finally come off the ventilator.
Now Nicky lives in Wanaka and is determined to use his second chance at life to make a difference, with the support of his partner Jordan, he is setting his sights particularly on the needs of young people to develop their potential and safely cross into their adult years. He feels he can assist by sharing his experiences and the insights he has gained and he continues to gain as he challenges himself physically and mentally in this new environment .
He wants youth to realise all decisions have consequences. That in life things happen and it’s how one reacts that is the key. To recognise the importance of dreams and being prepared to commit so that giving up is not an option. To share how his own life has moved forward with a new purpose which has included establishing a clothing business, with the logo, ‘Brothers Keep on Walking’
It’s clear Nicky recognises the importance of youth having support and that each person will embrace who they are.” He knows the importance of loving parents, caring relationships and being committed to never give up as he, and Jordan, move forward with new goals into 2019.

Speaker Bio - Paul van Klink, 5 March
Paul van Klink has lived in Wanaka since 2012. He currently works for Otago Fish & Game and has been involved with the Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs Restoration which some of members will be familiar with. Prior to moving to Otago he spent 20 years working on threatened species conservation projects mostly on the West Coast. In 2009 he began training a dog to become a protected species dog. His springer spaniel / border collie cross "Hoki" was certified in 2010. She is now 9 years old and is one of 10 protected species dogs in the South Island that work on whio (blue duck) conservation. Tuesday evening, he will talk about whio conservation and how his dog Hoki helps locate these iconic birds of the back country rivers along the Southern Alps.

Hi! We are Joe and Verity, and we are cycling from the UK to India.
We are cycling from London through 15 countries and covering at least 5000 miles to visit Magic Bus, an education and gender equality charity based in Mumbai. Please see our JustGiving page to donate direct to Magic Bus. See our blog for updates and more frequent photos on our Instagram!
Dear Mr President,
I am writing on the off-chance that your Rotary Club might be able to help. I am a member of the Rotary Club of Bathavon, here in the UK; my son and his wife have just completed a cycle ride from Felsted School in Essex to Mumbai to raise funds for the Magic Bus charity in India. They have had such a great time that they are now cycling from Mandalay in Burma to Singapore; and then their plan is to cycle from Auckland to Wanaka where they hope to finish/celebrate with two months of skiing before returning to work and reality back in the UK in July or August. For most of their trip they have 'wild camped' and stayed very cheaply. This might be impossible in Wanaka in the winter so I am wondering if any of your club members have themselves, or know of anyone who has, a studio/spare room/shed/garage they might rent out for a bit, possibly mid June-mid August. Joe and Verity would be delighted to talk to your club about their experiences and you might enjoy this link: http://www.byjovebybike.co.uk/ Although they look a tad dishevelled in the blog they scrub up well. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
On 23 February 1905, Paul P. Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram E. Shorey gathered in Loehr’s office for what would become known as the first Rotary club meeting.
Harris’ desire for camaraderie among business associates brought together these four men and eventually led to an international organization of service and fellowship.
