To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
Congratulations to the Winter Crop Competition organising team, led by Deans Hudson with support over the last few months from his working group, and from our Fundraising Committee. A full room at the Rugby Club was well fed by Aspiring Rotary led by Clayton Hope, entertained by ex broadcaster Peter Williams and separated from some of their money by PGG Wrightson auctioneer Craig Knight. Final results are still being confirmed, at the time of writing, but we anticipate something in the order of $45 - 50,000 being available, to help the fire brigades at Tarras, Luggate and Hawea, as well as the Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter. The overall winner was extremely pleased to have his crop recognised after having invested heavily in the breaking in and cultivation of a newish, to him, block of land.
While all of these thank-yous are totally justified, maybe the biggest thank-yous must go to our naming partner, the Upper Clutha A+P Society, and our very many sponsors; without whom the financial success of the competition would be hugely curtailed. The Rotary Club of Wanaka and the Upper Clutha community thank tham wholeheartedly.
So now, we turn our focus to the annual Rotary Club of Wanaka Book Sale, running over the first weekend of July - the start of the school holidays. Sorting continues on Tuesday and Sunday mornings at Wanaka Storage Solutions and thanks go to the hardy souls that gather there, on at times pretty chilly mornings. Look out for a roster coming soon, for helpers needed for a range of roles over the set-up, running and packout phases of the sale. It's a fun time and it brings us lots of great feedback from our community, as well as the funds raised.
It is with sadness that I share with you the news that past member Ray Hay died yesterday (June 8th). Ray returned to Dunedin, with wife Margaret, a few years ago, to be nearer his daughter and Dunedin's healthcare facilities. Both already had looming health issues, and Ray's finally caught up with him yesterday. Ray is survived by Margaret, who is in high-level care in Dunedin. As well as fond memories of Friday golf in Wanaka with Ray and a few other club members, I also remember our first real engagement when, six months after joining Rotary, I was enlisted as secretary of the Rotary Club of Dunedin East during Ray's term of presidency.
And finally, a reminder that our changeover of president will take place on Friday June 27th - please look out a sign-up list. As well as being well fed, we'll be entertained by some Rotary Magic and be able to reflect briefly on the year past and the year ahead.

Candace Bangura is a non-profit manager with over 30 years of experience working in community development. Prior to arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand she had paid and volunteer roles with the Peace Corps, Rotary International, World Relief, and Amnesty International. Living in Southland for the past 10 years, Candace served as the Director of the Number 10 Youth One Stop Shop and is currently the General Manager of the Southern Charity Hospital. Her involvement with Rotary started with 10 years of employment at The Rotary Foundation in the humanitarian grants area where she served as the Area of Focus Manager for Economic and Community Development. As a Rotarian she has served as a club president, assistant district governor, member of the district rotary foundation committee, and member of the cadre of technical advisors. Candace is motivated by exposure to different cultures and viewpoints. She was born in the United States and has lived in the Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Paraguay, the United Kingdom, and Aotearoa New Zealand

Rotarians assembled at the Kahu Youth Centre on Tuesday to be addressed and shown around the Centre by Anna Sutherland. This is now a very impressive facility catering for youths of early teenage years.
A group of Wanaka Rotarians met with Nic Blennerhassett at the memorial seat dedicated to John and Jill Blennerhassett and to celebrate the completion of the project.

Success on the bowling green last night!
The Rotary Club of Wanaka Indoor Bowling team of John Milburn(lead), Mike Elliot (somewhere in the middle) and Richard Gray (Skip) had a very successful evening against some very strong opposition
last night, winning both matches in some style – the first 9 – 2 and the second 10 – 2. This allowed Rotary to come second on the night – a great result.
Skip Richard was very humble in his comments about the lack of reasonable opposition and how very well the Rotary team played, commenting “Well done, chaps, a good win!”
The Team was boosted by a cup of tea at half time, which immensely helped the concentration in the second game. The fact that Mr. Milburn was heard telling jokes to the opposition as they were about to launch an attack also definitely helped the final score.
Unfortunately the camera was broken on the team phone to record this amazing team for posterity, but their names shall go down in history.
