Tuesday 16 October 2018 -

Last Tuesday we had Andrew Hamilton the DG visit the club. Mary and I had him for lunch and then spent the afternoon with him. It was great to talk about what had been happening in Rotary over the past 2 months here in Wanaka and also the district.

It was also good to have David’s son James Brewer at our meeting talking about his son’s health problems. James is going to run the Old Goast Trail to raise funds for McDonald House. I encourage you to make a donation by going on to the give a little page and search Jack Brewer.

This weekend has been busy with the Book Sale and annual fundraising event. I was able to help setting up the books on the Thursday and from what I have heard the sale seems to have gone well. Mary went down and brought her usual number of books. Look forward to hearing on Tuesday how it all went.

Also on Saturday night we had the Koru Trio musicians playing at Edgewater and had a very good attendance. Well done to those organising the event. Thanks to Harraways and New World for sponsoring the night. This was a bad day for me firstly forgetting to turn up and help Deans in the morning setting everything up and then arriving late for the concert. I will put in an early guilty plea to the Sargent for Tuesday and hopefully he will be lenient on me.

Remember the Duck Race next Saturday so keep selling the small ducks and return your raffle books to Richard all sold. This is another big fundraising event for the club.

While talking about fundraisers I note the new Rotary club in Wanaka are selling Fireworks soon as a fundraiser so if you are in the market for fireworks you may wish to support them.

See you all on Tuesday

District 9980 Car Rally and Fun (Track) Day

HIGHLANDS MOTORSPORTS PARK, CORNER SH6 AND SANDFLAT ROAD, CROMWELL

Fill up as many cars as you can with your club members, family and friends. Car rally to Cromwell in the morning, plenty of routes to get you there so plan some fun stops on the way.

BBQ lunch starts at 12.30pm (courtesy of Cromwell Rotary), take your car on and around the Highlands circuit starting from 1pm, and enjoy some great Fellowship and meet some Great Rotarian's and their guests.

$10 Per person for lunch and $20 entry fee per car with all proceeds after expenses to go to Rotary Projects.

Then maybe try a wine tasting or two once done at the many vineyards in the area or just enjoy Sunny Central to your hearts content.
Highlands have lots to do and see, so maybe a friendly grudge match on the go-karts or a blast around the track in a Ferrari.
The Hamilton Cup is up for grabs for the best turned out AG's area so get your thinking caps on and race gear organised.

DG Andrew says:

This year the District is holding a “Fun Day”. Because our Rotary District covers a large area, we don’t all get together very often. This is a social day, an opportunity to catch up with old friends and make some new friends from members of other Rotary Clubs. The more we all get to know each other, the more contacts we each have amongst our Rotary Clubs and the more we can all achieve both locally and globally, and of course the more fun we can have on the way!

The Assistant Governors have made a wonderful job of organising the day. Please feel free to bring family and friends. Barbara and I look forward to seeing everyone in Cromwell – and maybe on the racetrack!!

PLEASE LET YOUR PRESIDENT KNOW IF YOU ARE COMING ALONG AND HOW MANY WILL BE IN YOUR VEHICLE SO WE CAN PLAN THE CATERING.

FINAL NUMBERS NEEDED BY 5pm on FRIDAY THE 2ND OF NOVEMBER

Dear Wanaka Rotary Club

Hello, Alice Muir here (Jackie Muir's daughter) mural artist from Milton aka Alice Muiral.

I am launching some cute and quirky picture books soon and kicking off the celebrations in Central Otago at the Cardrona Distillery, who feature in my Aotearoa Christmas book.

You are all invited to come along Saturday 20th October 3pm-5pm, complimentary luxury cocktail or mocktail upon arrival. There will be a couple of Rotarian's from our area there.

Hope to see you there!

I am forwarding a photo taken on Saturday night at the Koru Trio evening - Pavilion Edgewater.

The pic shows the Trio, Rachel Moody, violin, Bede Hanley, oboe and James Fry clarinet.

We had over 100 guests in the Pavilion at Edgewater Resort - a very successful night - chamber music at its best in a very entertaining and enjoyable programme.

Lots of chatter between the music items. The audience enjoyed a wonderful evening.

Proceeds will go to emergency relief kits for use in the South Pacific following a disaster.

Thanks to our sponsors New World and Harraways.

Final figures will be available shortly.

Thanks
Don

Celebrate all year long

Your World Polio Day event doesn’t have to happen on 24 October — you can hold an event any time of year.

In Brazil, hundreds of Rotary clubs, along with the Ministry of Health, launched a nationwide polio and measles immunization campaign 6 August-14 September. Rotary polio ambassador and model Isabeli Fontana lent her support by recording radio ads, sharing information on social media, conducting interviews with national and international media outlets, and visiting a health center in São Paulo.

Thanks to this campaign, Rotarians contributed to the vaccination of nearly all 11.1 million children under the age of five in Brazil.

Graeme Thompson

Guest Speaker Introduction

16 October 2018

Graeme will speak about his at times colourful life experiences which spanned from Central Otago farm boy to runner-up Businessman of the Year and the OBE.

Then came business failure and imprisonment followed by the hard climb back to credibility as successful businessman once again this time building what became a major wine exporting company.

It’s a powerful story of resilience and tenacity.
