TEAM LAKE WANAKA - What Are We Doing?
Many Wanaka residents would have seen my wee Mini around the township, it’s hard to miss!! As part of the 6th bi-annual 2019 Pork Pie Charity Run we’ll be driving our Mini near on 3000km from Auckland to Kaitaia, then south to Invercargill in just over six days. This epic journey will test our willpower, stamina, sense of humour and my beloved vehicle to the limit. Being from Wanaka, it’s bought up tough so should make it easily!  It’s all in the name of a good cause though – we are proud to be raising funds for KidsCan to help Kiwi kids in need reach their full potential. We are just one of 60 Mini teams entered in this Charity Run, with our team goal to raise over $5000. All teams combined are aiming to raise $250,000. This will go along way to help Kiwi Kids via KidsCan.

KidsCan is a charity that is helping Kiwi kids living in hardship reach their full potential and create brighter futures for themselves.
They provide Kiwi kids in need with food, clothing and health items at school, so they can get into the classroom in a position to learn. KidsCan does this because they believe that education equals opportunity, and all children, regardless of their social economic background should have an equal chance. To date KidsCan has partnered with over 740 low decile New Zealand Schools, given out over 27 Million food items, over 170,000 pairs of shoes,704,000 health and hygiene items, 305,000 raincoats. A mere donation of $50 will supply two kids with footwear for a year.

I encourage all Wanaka Rotary members to help us and help NZ kids by donating to our Gofundraise page, it’s really easy. If you cannot do this, just pass me the cash and I can deposit it on your behalf.

Many Thanks

Tuesday 19 March

It was a little disappointing we only had one student from MAC for the speech contest this year after one other student pulled out at the last minute. But Isobel Smith did not disappoint us and delivered a very accomplished speech. We wish her all the best when she competes in the Area final which the Wanaka Rotary club will be hosting on the 2nd April. Hopefully we will have contestants from the Alexandra, Cromwell and Queenstown clubs join us.

A reminder to be careful when putting in your apology for Rotary. Please use a browser that allows the calendar to appear. If not please be careful to check the format of the date / month.

One other common mistake when putting in an apology is to mistakenly enter the date you are entering the apology, instead of the date of the meeting which you wish to apologise  for.

Please if you have to contact me in regard to putting in an apology please use my Cell Phone and the number is  027 2010470

We do have a directors meeting this coming week so if you have something you would like the directors to discuss please get in contact with me.

You will see the names of two proposed new members in the bulletin this week, Warwick Deuchrass and Chris Liggins. We also have a number of other proposed new members that will come up in the coming months. If you know of someone that would make a good Rotarian please bring them along to a meeting.

We have the Tasmanian group coming on a Personal Development exchange (same as old GSE exchange) on the 23rd of April and I would like another couple of people to host a member  for 3 days. If you are able to help please contact me.

Looking forward to this coming weeks speaker, Geoff Dickie, “The Traverse of Scott Base”

See you on Tuesday

Regards, President George

Geoff Dickey Speaker Tues 19 Mar - Antarctic Traverse

Geoff was educated in Wanaka, and ran a successful automotive engineering business in town  for over 25 years. He spends his winter's managing machinery at Treble Cone. His first trip to the frozen continent was Summer 2014/15.  Flew from Punta arenas , Chile , to a tent camp on the Union Glacier Blue ice runway. That season was about 90 days long which is along time to be camping in a tent. He has  now worked four seasons  in Antarctica specialising as a Traverse mechanic/ driver operating snow groomer machines pulling up to 60 tonnes of fuel and supplies to remote camps up to 1200km from base.

As we reflect on the horrific and tragic events in Christchurch yesterday, it is difficult to believe such violence could happen in peaceful New Zealand.

If any individual or Club would like to offer financial support to the victims and their families of this devastating attack, the Riccarton, Linwood-Woolston and Ferrymead Rotary Clubs have set up a fund.

The account number for the fund which is being managed by the Riccarton Club is: 03-0823-0350538-00.
Please put your name and “Mosque Appeal” as the reference.

The thoughts of District 9980 are with the people of Christchurch, the victims and their families. May this never happen again, anywhere.

Kind Regards

Andrew

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION - YOUR FOUNDATION

A gift to The Rotary Foundation allows Rotary to improve communities at home and around the world by strengthening peace efforts, providing clean water and sanitation, supporting education, growing local economies, saving mothers and children, and fighting disease.
You can choose to make a one-time gift, or enrol in Rotary Direct, Rotary's recurring giving program, to support the Rotary Foundation’s efforts year round. The Rotary Foundation recognizes donors to express its gratitude for your commitment and offers individual and club recognitions, as well as naming recognitions that let you honour a friend or family member with a named or endowed gift.
When you give money to The Rotary Foundation it goes to Rotary International. Three years later 50% of that money comes back to the District as District Grant Funds and 50% is placed in the DDF fund for our District. This is money that can be accessed for Global Grants.
