Tuesday 23 October 2018 -

As I write this the Duck race is just 1 more sleep away. Yesterday afternoon I spent a couple of hours at New World selling ducks and will spend this afternoon with Mary down there also. Then it will be round to Harcourt’s for the judging of the corporate ducks. Richard with the help of a few others has done a great job selling the corporate ducks this year with over 50 sold. A big thankyou to everyone selling the corporate ducks and especially Pip O’Regan for your efforts. With the small ducks some members have been very good at selling their books while others may have made a bigger effort. These fundraisers do rely on everyone making an effort and not just leaving it to the same few.

Last weekend we had the book sale over Friday Saturday and Sunday which was very successful again this year. The amount of money raised is just short of $12000 which is as good as it has been in recent years. A lot of work goes into the book sale over the 2 months leading up to the weekend. Can I say a big thank you to all those involved from those collecting the books at Mitre 10 to those that turned up at Wanaka Storage Solutions on Tuesdays and Thursdays sorting the books and then everyone for the big effort over the weekend delivering the books and assisting at the sale. There are two members who I want to thank especially. Firstly Mike Elliot for your work in organising everything, well done, and also Richard for the use of your facilities at Wanaka Storage. It is the generosity of members like Richard that are important to the continued success of this club.

Also last weekend we had the Koru Trio and what a great night that was. A big thank you to Don. One of the great things about Rotary is that we all come with a diverse range of experiences, different talents and connections and therefore are able to in different ways put together events like this. Well done Don and those who also helped.

I am away down to the farm on Sunday to spray around all my trees and hope to be back for Tuesday night otherwise Debs will be taking the meeting.

Graeme Thompson - Guest Speaker Report

16 October 2018

It was New Zealand's biggest company scandal in 1994 – the Fortex meat company collapsed owing creditors $130 million and $30m to Canterbury farmers and Graeme Thompson was the Chief Executive.

He was 51 in 1996 when he was sentenced to six-and-a-half year's jail for falsifying the Fortex accounts. Company accountant Michael Mullins, who was sentenced to four years behind bars, explained how $20m of loans had been classed as income.

Failure came in spite of a widely-acclaimed evening shift work agreement with the Meat Workers Union at Seafield near Ashburton. Along with another plant Silverstream in Mosgeil, Fortex provided work for 1800 people and some estimates put its overall contribution into the South Island economy as high as $300m a year in its heyday between 1985 and 1993.

Many Canterbury sheep farmers were still recovering from the disastrous snowstorm of 1991 and Fortex continued to take their lambs until the collapse.

Thompson's fall from grace came after Fortex had won a Deloitte award, he was runner-up for an executive award with Hugh Fletcher, received an Order of the British Empire for services to exporting, and Lincoln University's Bledisloe Medal.

Since being released from prison in 1998 Graeme has been working in the export bulk wine industry and until recently has been running his company Lismore Wines. For 8 years they have been major shippers to the multiple grocery chains in the UK and Australia. Lismore has an average annual export volume of 4 million Litres primarily Marlborough and Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Last year Graeme published a book, More Paddocks to Plough, about his early life, the Fortex years, and rehabilitation back to society and a successful wine exporting business. "It is a story that not only exemplifies the extraordinary things that dynamic leadership of ourselves and others can achieve but also shows that we all have special resources to handle adversity and that success or failure is very much how we as individuals see it. Graeme's courage, resilience and unwavering support from his wife Barbara, family and friends saw him through that hard time”.
