Club Membership Fees Due Now!

You will have all received an invoice for the Rotary Club of Wanaka membership fees which are due now. You will see there is a discount if paid before the 20th of September 2018.

Many clubs around New Zealand have set their subs within the $200 to $240 range so this Club is in line with that.

We pay the Rotary International affiliation fees as soon as the new year begins – 1 July 2018. This is based on the number of members at the 1st July 2017 and is for six months. The second 6 months is invoiced in January 2018. Rotary International get their data for the invoice from Club Runner and will pick up that our Club will have increased its membership over the next six months (assuming all our new members are signed in!).

A couple of years ago I did some pie charts to show the breakdown of where membership fees are allocated. I intend to update this and will put it in the Bulletin in due course. In brief the fees you pay go towards District affiliation, Rotary International affiliation, Rotary Down Under magazine and towards the Club running costs such as Club Runner/website management, the PO Box for Charitable Trust applications, speaker meal and thank you costs.

To make sure you get the discount on offer why not pay now or set up an advance payment in your banking system so you don’t miss out! From the Treasurer – Margaret West

Tuesday 7 August 2018 - President George's Message:

You will see the new banner at the top of our bulletin this week. This is the view I get to see looking back towards Wanaka when driving for Ridgeline Adventures. Many thanks to Mark Orbell for the photo and Derek Valentine for the changing of the banner. We are also updating some of the photos on the website, so thanks to all those involved.

Our club directory arrived from the printer last week and was handed out at the meeting. We have found a number of mistakes where information had not been updated, and where there was a breakdown between the updated and the printed version. As a result we are having the directory reprinted.

The name badges for the new members have arrived, so we will be inducting them as new members in the coming weeks.

Towards the end of Fran’s year as president we had a request to support a project concerning diabetes in Samoa. This project is progressing slowly. I am travelling to Samoa at the end of the month and will hopefully be making contact with the Rotary club in Apia, to start the process towards a Global grant.

Last week it was good to hear from Yeverly McCarthy about the Wanaka Community House that is to be built. This week we look forward to hearing from Russell Garbutt speak about environmentally friendly heating and cooling options.

Look forward to seeing you on Tuesday and remember the new apology procedure.

NEW APOLOGY PROCESS

Here is what Directors would like to trial:

* Apologies and Partner & Guest reservations are to be emailed to wanaka.rotary@gmail.com , the deadline is 5pm Monday (this is a temporary fix until ClubRunner completes some software changes to the Attendance module)

* A Rotary member will prepare the meal register and forward to the Golf Club by the specified time. Fran Tate will look after this duty until the end of August and will help the next person in line for the job.

* In the event of an emergency (circumstances beyond your control)

Contact President George 0272 010 470

In closing, it would be very much appreciated if everyone would endeavour to help streamline this procedure. The Golf Club Caterer Courtney Morgan will replace Ariana Mahia.

BOOK SALE HELP NEEDED

Help needed to sort the books for sale, every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 10 – 12. Access is down Gordon Road and look for the Wanaka Storage sign just before the Brewery, with plenty of parking available in the storage grounds rather than on the street.

Guest Speaker Report 31 July 2018

Yeverley McCarthy

Yeverley McCarthy was appointed a trustee for the Wanaka Community  House Charitable  trust  three years ago. Having been  involved in the building of the Holy Family School and the Holy Family  church she really loves this sort of challenge. The project is about to kick off  and the site beside  the Anglican church  was blessed on the 29th  July at 11.30.  This was a public  event and  all were welcomed to attend. It was great to learn about the building its self and it uses.

Guest Speaker 7 August 2018

Russell Garbutt

Russell was born and raised in Dunedin, attended Maori Hill primary school, King Edward Technical College and joined what was the New Zealand Broadcasting Service as a Technical Trainee in 1963 spending most of the time at DNTV2 until 1970 when he travelled overseas to work at ATV Network in Birmingham as well as a bit of dairy goat farming in the far north of Norway.  Russell rejoined the NZBC in Christchurch working at CHTV3 until taking up a number of management positions in Dunedin before leaving to head the Media Production Unit at the University of Otago.  After retirement Russell stood for the Vincent Community Board and since then has been busy working on a number of committees in and around Clyde including museums, reserves and planning groups.  Russell’s wife died a little over two years ago but he has 8 grandchildren scattered from Germany to Dunedin to keep any spare time busy.

Russell got involved in community heating after listening to Greg Bodeker talk about why the Clutha river steams in winter and now is one of three trustees for the Central Districts Heating Trust who are working towards using available resources to heat and cool commercial and residential buildings using environmentally friendly technologies.  He believes that this is the way of the future and asks the question why aren’t we already using these technologies.

Rotary International

Presidential message of August 2018 - By Barry Rassin

A well-known saying goes, "If you want to change the world, go home and love your family." That doesn't mean people should ignore the needs outside their own homes; instead, they should pay attention to the needs within.

It can be tempting, when our priority is service, to focus only on the things that look like service: the projects, the planning, the work that yields a visible benefit to those who need it. But to do that work effectively, we need to keep our own house in order. In Rotary, that means conducting ourselves in accordance with the principles of Rotary, treating others with respect, and following The Four-Way Test. It means maximizing our impact by planning carefully and stewarding our resources wisely. And it means looking after the long-term health of our organization by ensuring that our membership is strong, engaged, and healthy.

Our membership has hovered around the same 1.2 million mark for 20 years. We aren't growing, and our membership is getting older. We have too many clubs that don't have the knowledge or motivation to have an impact: clubs that don't know what we're doing on a global level, clubs that don't know about our programs or our Foundation, that don't even know how to get involved. And with a membership that is still mostly male, we clearly aren't doing enough to become the organization of choice for women who are seeking to serve.

We are a membership organization first. If we want to achieve the goals we've set for ourselves, we need to put membership first. All of us have a responsibility to take membership seriously, not only by inviting prospective members, but also by making sure new members are welcomed into clubs that offer them something of value. If you see someone walk into a meeting and hesitate, be sure that person has a place to sit and is part of the conversation. If you're enthusiastic about a Rotary program, make sure your club knows about it and knows how to get involved. If you see a need in your community, talk about it at this week's meeting. If we want to be part of an organization that's strong, that's active, that's having an impact – start at home, and Be the Inspiration in Rotary.
