To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
We may not have met at The Albie for a while, but things Rotary have remained busy. Committee night two weeks ago, Directors' meeting last week (see notes from that below), a full house at Polio Plus fundraiser movie Thelma and tomorrow we're visiting the new Coastguard Building at Eely Point, followed by dinner at WanaFusion for those who choose - and of course the sale of Duck Race tickets continues. We'll be hosting District Governor Dave McKissock tomorrow when he will address us on happenings in the wider Rotary world - a return visit for Dave, who many will know joined us at the 40th Anniversary Dinner.
Yesterday saw most of our recently inducted members gather at Pat and Leigh Heffernan's home (thank you for organising and the hospitality) to learn more about Rotary International, and its origins, The Rotary Foundation, the global structure of Rotary, the 1.4 million members in about 46,000 clubs scattered around the world, and where the Rotary Club of Wanaka fits into it all. A little fact I came across when preparing my presentation was that the Rotary 4-Way Test (see the sidebar) was not a Rotary invention; it was 'gifted' to Rotary in the 1940s, when Rotary International Director, Herbert Taylor, offered the Four Way Test to Rotary. It was a test which he had ‘scripted’ in 1932 to change the ethical climate at Club Aluminium Products; part of a plan to save that company from bankruptcy.
Also in this Bulletin is a flier advertising Aspiring Rotary's Spring Fundraiser over Labour Weekend - a chance to have a look around the private collection of cars, trucks, tractors and more at their home in Ballantyne Road - same site as Central Machinery Hire. This is the collection from which a few have been chosen every second year for display at Wheels at Wanaka, also a small selection have been seen each year at the Wanaka A&P Show. Seeing them altogether will be amazing, and quite possibly induce a feeling of nostalgia in even the most stoic. I also understand that Aspiring Rotary have arranged for the Woman's Health Bus to be present and operating - some of the funds raised will be donated to the bus to help with their operating costs.

Click on the For Rotarians Tab, the right hand one in the yellow coloured strip across and near the top of the page.
Then click up on the Notifications Report tab that pops up.
At that stage you'll be asked to Login to ClubRunner, the club management software we use. You'll need your user name ( probably "Firstname.Familyname.13202" unless you've had Julian Warren give you something else) and your password to Login - there are forgot password and forgot username options, or Webmaster Julian will be able to help.
Once logged in, a page called Reports Apologies and Guest Notifications will pop up
On the last line you'll see tabs to either view the report document, or to download PDF file - and there you will see what's recorded for all of us, including you.

Very successful weekend with a lot accomplished by the 15 Rotarians and partners plus 4 Aspiring Rotary ladies .Lodge looking spic and span for the summer season .
Graeme Smart oiled his jeans by standing too close to the the log splitter , prospective member Rob Hamilton left his jeans behind ( not sure what was going on there !!) ,Kelley Budd’s hubbie -builder extraordinaire Kyle ,cheated his way to an unassailable victory in a game of Crowns , and Graeme Brown put so much pressure on the water blaster he blew a hole in the hose .
Chris and Kelley did an awesome job preparing the food which John purchased with the expert help of Chris Wright .

Greetings to the Wanaka Rotary Club from New Zealand Olympic Luge
On behalf of the New Zealand Olympic Luge Association and Hunter Burke, thank you for the generous support provided to Hunter during the 2023/24season.
During the past Northern Hemisphere winter, 20 (now 21) year old Hunter represented New Zealand in two sports in Europe. Beginning with the New Zealand Junior Men’s Curling team, in mid-December, he competed at the Junior B World Championships in Lehti/Finland. Immediately after that he swapped his curling broom for a luge sled for training on tracks
in Igls/Austria, Bludenz/Austria and Altenberg/Germany. He then competed in three Junior World Cup races in Winterberg/Germany, Bludenz/Austria and St Moritz/Switzerland. His luge season concluded with a final week of training and the Junior World Championships in Lillehammer/Norway.
His results in the races were Winterberg – 16^th , Bludenz – 19^th , St
Moritz – 24^th and Lillehammer – 27^th .
After competing in the 2022 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Switzerland, 2023/24 was the first-time Hunter was back luging internationally since early 2022. The reason for this was the remnants of Covid-19 , finances and Hunter’s desire to complete his tertiary education. With these matters somewhat behind us, other than for finances, Hunter’s goal is to compete at the 2030 Olympic Winter Games in France. Despite not training or competing overseas during the 2022/23 international season Hunter spent the two intervening winters training and competing on our track in Naseby, the only ice luge track in the Southern Hemisphere. This upcoming 2024/25 season will be Hunter’s first season racing as a senior and he is ready to make that step up.

• Annual Club Subscriptions: Discussion to set membership subs for the current financial year,
noting that last year the non discounted rate was $245. It was agreed that these will be set at $250,
discounted to $225 if paid by 30th November 2024.
Further noted that this level for subscriptions is only made possible by a subsidy of of funds 1⁄3
raised at Foundation Auction.
• Charitable Donation Receipts: It was agreed that a subcommittee consisting of Treasurer Richard,
President Alan, President Elect Marie and PP Deans meet with Accounts Reviewer Allan Kelly to
establish a protocol for future use - this protocol will be adopted by Directors to provide clarity and
certainty for members when considering future donations to the Rotary Club of Wanaka Charitable
Trust.
• Accounts Finalisation Review: It was agreed that Alan Richardson, meet with Richard Gray and
Deans Hudson to review the accounting recommendations made by Allan Kelly (external reviewing
accountant) prior to sign-off of the accounts for the year, and the two preceding years.
2. Administration Report (Marie Fitchett)
• Purchase of Computer: Proposal to buy a Lenovo Laptop for $1,219.00 for the club’s
administration. Exact model and accessories to be confirmed, needs a bag and possibly an extra
plug-in interface and mouse. Noted a Microsoft licence of $129.00 p.a. needed.
Proposed new PC is mainly used for audio visual presentations at Club meetings and for short
term storage of documents relevant to ongoing activity.
• Google Drive Account: Ongoing discussions about setting up Google Drive for backup at $5 per
month. Discussions being held on alternative (One Drive).
Noted : Club files of an ongoing nature (decades) probably better stored in an external provider ,
not on the PC.
Policy on storage and Google account needs some technical input. Ron Horner, Julian Warren
and Geoff Tomkins will meet and get back to Directors at a later date.
• Almoner: Sally Angus has been appointed as the Almoner going forward.
• Rosters: Return to a four-week forward roster schedule for member duties in Bulletin.
3. PR and Media Report (Tony O’Regan)
• Press Release:Woman’s Health Bus PCR machine: sent to various media outlets.
• Seven Sharp Feature: Pursuing a story on national TV for the Woman’s Health Bus.
• Duck Race Advertising: Using Wanaka App, The Messenger, Facebook.
• Securing loud hailer from MAC for the Duck Race.
4. Foundation Report (Elaine Kelly)
• Movie Night: Updated from committee report – all tickets sold including a few to Aspiring
Rotary members. Includes a raffle for fundraising ($5 per ticket or 3 for $10).
• Candice Embling (Invercargill) will speak in May/June about Foundation International
• Discussion: Noted request that speakers provide educational content not sales pitches.
5. Club Membership Report (Pat Heffernan)

6. Fundraising Report (Geoff McLeay)
● Duck Race (Nov 9, 2024):
1. 170 businesses contacted, 21 entries received.
2. Large corporate ducks storage and ticket distribution handled by Rob and John H.
3. Selling of tickets at New World and Mitre 10 averaging $475/day.
● Gibbston Valley Concert (Jan 18, ‘25): Have 26 volunteers, no further action needed.
● Future Fundraising Events:
1. A&P Show (Mar 7-8, 2025): Volunteer hours remunerated at $25/hour to the Club.
2. Wheels at Wanaka (Easter 2025): Confirmed participation.
3. Winter Crop Competition (May 2025):
a. Productive meeting held with Tim Davis to get feedback from farmers .
b. The Directors requested that arrangements re the venue and possible beneficiaries are
discussed with the Directors well in advance of any commitments being made.
4. Book & Jigsaw Sale (July 2025): Venue booked. Preparations underway.
5. Warbirds 2026 : Easter 2026 - Nothing to report at this time.

7. Service Projects Report (Nicola Brown)
• Grant Application: Recommendation to approve a $500 grant to Kirsty Cole - selected for the NZ
team at the 2024 Masters Hockey World Cup.
• Tititea Lodge Event: Successful turnout on 12/13 October. Noted that the event was productive,
highly enjoyable, and Aspiring Rotary assisted with good representation.
8. Youth and Vocation Report (Nikki Carey)
• Visit to Coastguard Wanaka & dinner at Wanafusion 22 Oct, DG Dave McKissock will be in
attendance
• Potential visits : to farms involved in the cropping competition.
• MAC Speech Competition : Reviewed positively with no changes needed for next year.
• MAC Scholarship: Discussion on scoring criteria and coordination with Aspiring Rotary to avoid
awarding the scholarship to the same candidate.
• RYLA Queenstown (Jan 26-31, 2025): Reminders sent to candidates.
• Kaha Youth Scholarship : Under way, KY organising interview date. 2 of their trustees to be
interviewers. Kelley asked to be RCW rep on this panel. There are 3 candidates.
• Noted that District 9999 is not certified for Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) and without the
certification cannot host or organise exchanges with other Rotary Districts. Noted that the DG
has been involved in the RYE programme in the past and is hopeful D9999 will be able to
resolve this quickly.
9. Social/Club Activities Report (Peter Borrie)
• Bowls evening : 28 people attended
• Home hosting : Wednesday 5 pm 23rd October at Helen Tait’s house (90 Mill Street). Noted that
there is no requirement for hosting to be on Fridays going forward.
