Presidents Report 21st March 2022

Another great week done & dusted and Autumn is really starting to settle in. The colours are starting to come through in the trees too.
At last week’s meeting I announced the leadership structure for the next two years.

So I will take a break for six months from July 1 and Mike Elliot will be your Club President .

Then from January 1st, I will take over again for the following six months.

During this time Mike will shadow Alan Richardson and learn the Club Secretary role.

So after all that Alan Richardson will take over as President for the 2023-24 Rotary year and Mike will take on the role as Club Secretary and I will take a well-earned rest. (Not likely)

Moving forward I/we are still looking for members to stand up and take a leadership role. Our club will only remain strong if YOU ALL Help.

Have a great week and might see you at the gardens tomorrow night.

Cheers Rich

Presentation of the Rotary Honorary Certificate to Catherine Little

At our Tuesday 8th March weekly meeting, President Rich took great pleasure in presenting Catherine with her Honorary Membership Certificate  "In recognition of dedication and service to Rotary and our community".

Honorary Membership is offered to members who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals. Honorary membership is the highest distinction that a club may bestow and should be conferred only in exceptional cases.

Catherine was awarded her Honorary membership in 2018 after 22 years as a Rotary member. She is a long term resident of the Cardrona and Wanaka districts.

Thank you Catherine for your continuing years of dedicated service.

Ferg was married to Lynette for 48 years and has 4 children, 6 granddaughters and 1 grandson.

Ferg farmed 730 acres at Bayswater in Southland,  farming mainly sheep and fattened lambs. He also cropped 150 acres of cereals and 40 acres of swedes. He ran a Coopworth stud selling 100 rams annually. He also helped milk 30-40 cows supplying a local dairy factory.

New member profile: M.J. Moffat

Tuesday night was also M.J. Moffat's new member profile. M.J. took us through what has been a busy and varied work and home life. Initially she joined Deloitte's in 1982 to moving to Te Anau Downs Motor Inn in 1985  as a receptionist.

M.J. then moved to the T.H.C. as a trainee manager based in Te Anau and breaking into a male dominated industry. She then transferred to Queenstown and then to the T.H.C. Chateau at Mt Ruapehu.

In 1982 M.J. travelled overseas, based in London but visited many European Countries while there. She set up and ran Backpacker Hostels before returning to NZ just post 9.11. Meeting Chef Gordon Ramsay was a memorable event and he was more amiable than the brash celebrity role he plays according to M.J.

A period in Te Auau followed on the Milford Track and then postions with the Explorer Motel and Apartments, and then managing holiday houses and forming the "Holiday Stays" business.  Lastly M.J. has now moved to Wanaka and is the General Manager  of Club Wyndham Wanaka.

In between times M.J. has been working for the Electoral Commission and latterly as Returning Officer for South Dunedin.

M.J has a daughter, Emily, currently residing in Dunedin.  She has now purchased a property in central Wanaka which will keep her busy and which has much potential.

M.J. joined the Te Anau Rotary Club in Te Anau in 2012 and transferred to Wanaka Rotary in 2021.

Thank you for sharing your business experience and your many anecdotes, M.J. and trust you will to continue to enjoy your time in Wanaka.

Movie "The Duke" change of date

An update from Nicola Brown.

We had a call from Ruby Cinema to say that due to unforeseen circumstances the distributor has delayed the release of The Duke until April , so this has meant we have changed the date of the Rotary Polio Movie Night.

The new date is:  TUESDAY 12TH APRIL, at the same time of 7pm at Rubys Cinema

I hope this works for everyone? If you have bought a ticket already the only change is the date, or if that date doesn't suit please let Di know and we should be able to find a replacement.  Ticket sales have been going great, so make sure you let Di know if you want to come.  It's going to be a great night out and sure to be a lot of fun come April.

Immediate contact for further information is Di Cusens - 027 440 1460   cusensd@yahoo.com

The Duke  stars Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent and is a British comedy about a true story from the 1960s.  A taxi driver steals a valuable painting from the National Gallery and then sends the government ransom notes saying he’ll return the work when they start taking better care of the elderly!!  Helen Mirren plays the long-suffering wife of the taxi driver.

Community Garden Visit - Rotary Tuesday 22nd March
A further note from Nicola Brown

When you drive down the Outlet Road, drive past Northlake and before you come to the Outlet Camp there is a sign on the left hand side of the road that says - "Slow the ....duck...down." look out for a left hand turn just past this, and a little sign that says Grow Wanaka, that is where you turn in.  Parking is up to the right, you will see this is where they store caravans.

A Note from Secretary Alan

"Brew For a Future project"

Dear Alan,
The team at NRG In Invercargill often see Rotary Wine fundraisers, then we came up with the idea💡!  Why not have a beer fundraiser!!

We have approached a brewery in Dunedin who has been hit hard by Covid-19 and we would like to introduce craft beers to many of our district’s members.

We are currently expecting a slab (12 x 440ml cans) to cost $100 with the profits going towards Give Every Child a Future. A worthwhile charity giving children in developing nations across the pacific vaccinations to preventable disease.

Please advertise this is your club bulletin-meetings etc and get in touch with us at nrginvercargill@gmail.com if you are interested.

Regards
