Tuesday 20th March 2018  - President Fran's Message:

What a meeting last Tuesday , what a speaker - Emeritus Gil, guest speaker, spoke about the advances in medicine over the last decades & Director of Development Otago Medical Foundation , Susan Sims , spoke informally to some members after the meeting about her role in the Foundation, that of fundraising. The Cashmere Rotarians were very generous and donated their own Sergeants Session fees to our club and generously gave me a gift of 2 wine glasses, with the Rotary Club of Cashmere Branding on them. Paco & Kerry Janca were fare welled until their next visit and Rick and Bridget from Port Nicholson and John Talboys, conveyed their thanks for an interesting evening. Monica Steinrucke from the Rotary Club of Gebelsberg (Near Cologne)  exchanged flags and was invited for coffee the next day by the Jancas. There was an infectious zing about the evening and the result – was lots of positive feedback from members and guests alike.

In brief - 4 members attended the WOW Health & Safety Operations briefing on Thursday.

Membership Satisfaction Survey - Results of Survey will be available shortly for discussion in the next 2 weeks.

SPEAKER REPORT

Patron, Emeritus Professor Gil Barbeza
Otago Medical Research Foundation

Prof Barbezat recounted a fascinating journey of the management of Peptic Ulcers from empiric superstition back in the 1800’s to a researched scientific basis today.

Back in 1893 George Oliver a Yorkshire Phusician had the gadgets to measure the diameter of arteries in sheep his study was to take some Adrenal extract (from the Adrenal Glands just above the Kidneys ) and inject it into the sheep’s arteries. The arteries diameter decreased dramatically hence able to increase the Blood pressure of circulating blood. He then decide to try the same test on his son !!!

Fast forward …..adrenaline extracted form the adrenal glands now saves millions of lives every year. An amazing benefit to us all.

Prof Barbezat then related some personal health issues he had a flu like illness which became acute…Blood cultures taken….revealed Streptococcus Bacteria from a tooth infection Treatmant was IV antibiotics given continuously for 6 weeks. Still not making a great improvement…. Angiogram revealed some of the bacteria settled on the heart Valves …Open Heart Surgery to replace valves involved. Now well.

Past verses present in comparison.

Pre antibiotic era …. All over Rover as life not sustainable against the infection.

Antibiotic Era Infection would have still won with constant I V Line changes into small veins ruining the vein walls rendering them useless and blocked.

Now they use a PICC line which is a long thin catheter surgically inserted via a small peripheral vein into a major upper chest vein above the heart and stays in place without need to change allowing 24hr antibiotic infusion with a weaker solution that didn’t harm the blood vessel.

Prof Barbezat’personal research was related to Peptic Ulcers.

In earlier times the management of a 29 year old carpenter who had recurrent haematemisis (spewing Blood ) was to apply 20 leeches to the stomach wall to suck out the blood then numerous other crazy potions applied to the anus, plus horrible diets which were very bland ie rice and quince syrup

Moving forward 50 years and a lot of research.

Antacids were perscribed but these just dried up your mouth and mad it very hard to pass urine and the ulcer would reappear the moment you stopped taking the drugs…. Fast forward …after failed medical treatments Introduction of Surgical removal of large pieces of affected bowel and by passes still had the recurrence of Ulcers and lots of side effects following the surgery.

Fast forward … Then came the endoscope via which small samples of the stomach wall lead to a more accurate diagnosis. Treatment was instigated then followup endoscopies to gauge the effect of treatment.

Fast forward….. Two Australian Physicians discovered the little balck spots which linked to stomach infection and was called Helicobacter Pylori or H Pylori Eradication of these cured the ulcer. Sadly this was discovered in 1982 but the medical profession were very sceptical !

This research finally won a Noble Peace Prize in 2005.

Still lots to discover and good ideas need good support.

Prof Barbezat a Rugby enthusiast says Ripper Rugby ultimately produces Great All Blacks. He likens his research to the Ripper Rugby of Research.

Outward Bound Sir Roy McKenzie Course 2018

Each year, the JR McKenzie Youth Education Fund sponsors young people to attend a 21 day Outward Bound Course.  This year is no different and we are fortunate to have fully funded positions to give away, therefore we are again on the hunt for potential course participants.

The course has changed slightly this year and the J R McKenzie Youth Education Fund is providing funding of $4,025 towards the course cost for 2 young school aged people (aged 16-18) to attend a Mind Body and Soul course at Outward Bound.  The course duration is 21 days and will be held from the 2nd to 22nd of July 2018.  This is a great opportunity for 2 young people from our district to attend.  The selected candidates will need to find their own way to and from Picton.

Ideal candidates would not normally be the head boy or girl of their school or those that may have such an opportunity via another source, but someone who would benefit greatly from attending, who otherwise would not normally get the opportunity to attend.

Can you please share this opportunity with your Youth Committee, the high schools or other youth groups you look after and see if anyone is keen to apply?  If they are, have them complete the attached enrolment form then interview the candidates at a club level to ascertain whether or not they are suitable.  The committee will accept ONE application per club/school for consideration. Applications no later than Friday the 11th of May 2018.  Due to time constraints and the popularity of this Outward Bound opportunity, no late applications will be accepted.

The final 2 candidates will be selected by the District J R McKenzie Youth Education Fund Committee.  The committee’s decision will be based on the written application together with any supporting comments from the school and/or Rotary Club.  The decision of the committee will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Feel free to contact me direct if you require any further information or clarification.
