To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
Great to have Ken Johnston inducted last week - welcome Ken and I am sure you will he an asset to the Club .
Also a very interesting presentation from opticians Tui and Simon . Ironically, I took Jenny to Dunedin for a cataract / lens procedure on Thursday and I apparently need this soon myself .(I’ll have to cancel the Labrador ).
Please support Dave Evans and the Foundation team for the Movie Night at the Paradiso on Tuesday 24th which replaces our normal meeting and promises to be a fun night - A Haunting in Venice . The Club is committed to 70 tickets, so we need to have 70 attendees - hence friends and neighbours or random people you meet in the street etc. If we don’t the Club pays !!
Big news is that for our next regular meeting on the 31st October we are MOVING TO A NEW VENUE- the Albert Town Tavern which offers a number of key advantages over the present Columbus Cafe ( who have looked after us well given the constraints of the venue and kitchen ).
Then on November 7th we are away to the races - the Melbourne Cup function at B- Effect ably organized again by Chis Wright (contact Chris if you want tickets ).
A great kauri has fallen . Sad that Sir Tim Wallis , an absolute legend of the local area , the rest of NZ and the world has flown his last mission . No doubt several of our members may be attending his farewell .

October 31st. Andrena Davis: Event Manager Warbirds over Wanaka
Tuesday 17th October: Tui Homer and Simon Breton
Tui Homer and Simon Breton from Matthew Central Vision spoke on Tuesday October the 17th about aging of the eyes. Their comprehensive presentation covered a range of problems affecting our eyes. The problems were divided into two groups, firstly those which are avoidable including diabetic retinopathy and dry eyes, and secondly those which are unavoidable as we have more birthdays. These included cataracts and glaucoma. The take home message was to get regular eye checks before our eyes suddenly deteriorate and leave us with seriously impaired vision.

My name is Dan Griffin and I was diagnosed with stage four cancer in October last year and given 6-18 months to live. One year on I am doing far better than expected due to immunotherapy which is costing my young family $17,000 per monthly treatment. I have two boys aged 7 and 4 and along with my wife Erin they are my motivation to fight this cancer into remission.
I have been told that would take a miracle but to me immunotherapy is that miracle. As a family we have now spent $100,000. I went to Mt Aspiring College and lived in Wanaka but have moved to Te Anau as Real.NZ offered me a job here when I was working for Cardrona. Real.NZ has kindly given me a cruise in Milford Sound on Saturday the 18th of November at 3.15pm to sell to raise funds.
I am asking for your help to publicize this in the Wanaka community via your club. We have the opportunity to sell 400 tickets at $200 per person which includes a welcome drink once onboard and canapes. The cruise will run longer than 2 hours if weather permits.
I am hopeful to speak to the Te Anau Rotary Club as well as Lions to get as much reach as possible. I can also do the same if your club.

WAO Wanaka’s Annual Summit.
This is a series of events to promote a sustainable community, running from 24th-29th October. This year's event is focusing on community action around resilience, collaboration, circular and local economy, and climate change and biodiversity.
We have talks, workshops, films and tours all designed to keep you informed, help you, and help the planet.
You’re sure to find something that will inspire you into action. The events below encompass better building, economics, what will 2050 look like, farming, climate change, protecting native species, pollution and waste management.
Some of the events are free. The films are fun. The speakers are great, world leaders in their scientific disciplines or practical hands-on experts, or engaging popular speakers.

The Gibbston Valley Concert is scheduled for Saturday, 3 February 2024.
The Rotary Club of Wanaka has once again agreed to provide the labour to staff the two main entrance gates at the Gibbston Valley Concert on Saturday, 3 February 2024. Some of us may also be asked to assist in some other areas e.g. monitoring of drink water tanks.
An opportunity to party or simply chill out and relax with friends and family, whilst enjoying listening to some old musical favourites! All AFTER a stint helping to raise funds for our local Rotary Club, with all funds going to local community groups.
Most of you are well experienced, having helped previously. We will be supplied with scanners to scan people's tickets as they enter, so the task is a relatively simple one. We just need to ensure that we have enough people on hand on the day! Security staff will be in attendance checking bags etc. Event management will be on hand to troubleshoot.
Everyone who volunteers, will be provided with a free pass to the concert (value $159).
In addition to the above, the Rotary Club of Wanaka has been given the opportunity to collect donations from the Cromwell car park. We can expect a reasonably good collection here for just a few hours of effort.
In previous years, most people have been able to be released from the gates at around 1.00 - 1.30pm. All helpers are usually released by 2.30pm. The carpark collection is from 8.30am to whenever, but usually, it is wound up by 1.00pm.
People will be able to have short breaks during their shifts, and you can bring in outside food and non-alcoholic drinks. No outside alcohol is permitted.
Everyone helping on the day with ticketing at the entrance gates will be required to attend an on-site briefing at 8.00am, with the gates manned from 8.30am.

This will be the 12th year of this concert series and it is expected to be a great concert for people to enjoy and relax. It also provides the Rotary Club of Wanaka with a significant fundraising opportunity.
