Tuesday 24 July 2018 - President George's Message:

Hi All

I have just come back from our farm in the Gore area where I have been fencing off a waterway and have just started planting the first of about 1000 trees. This is a continuation of lots of work on our farm around caring for the environment. A few years before we retired Mary and I won the Sir Peter Elworthy Environmental Award for New Zealand.

Last week at Rotary we had Joan Kiernan talk about Rotary Foundation and district and global grants. Perhaps the highlight for the evening was having Jessie Waghorn a recipient of a rotary donation thank the club. She is a young child, a diabetic and demonstrated the difference the new monitoring device has made to her life. We were then all treated to some cub cakes which she had made.

One of the things that is great with the Wanaka Rotary club is that we have so much planning well in hand. An example is not only do we have the President Elect in Deb Budden in place but we also have the President Nominee Mike Elliot in place for the 2020/21 year.

The directors are all busy organising meetings and planning the year’s events, fundraisers, projects etc. Please help them where you can and do not leave them to do the majority of the work.

See you all at Rotary this week. When I first joined the Gore Club someone made the following comment to me. “If you do not attend you deny someone else the privilege of your company”

Guest Speaker Report on Gordon Bailey 10 July - Catherine Little

"I have always thought that a journey to China and Tibet would be wonderful after learning about Marco Polo as a child. Too late now!....but how good to hear of Gordon's adventure in the high places where the rhododendrons come from.

He shared with us his early years and study at Lincoln and told us that he was very interested in those plants. He was invited by a man who led small groups into places of great difficulty but also of great interest, to come to share his knowledge about rhododendrons with the group. This entailed walking for eight days up a valley and over a high pass and down another valley back to civilazation where in the food markets he had pictures of rats all ready to be roasted!

Gordon had some beautiful pictures of the rhododendrons in their natural environment--almost all the subtle colours of the rainbow. The last photo showed the 'moon mountain' {I think it was called}. High up on the mountain range is this peak with a large round hole in it; an amazing natural feature.

Two interesting comments about the trek:  the porters who carried the gear seemed to live on tea with salt added;  wild horses broke into the food tent on the first night so the rations were rather scarce for the rest of the journey! As someone who is fond of horses, I hope that they did not suffer any ill effects!".

Guest Speaker Report on Joan Kiernan 17 July - John Milburn

Joan ,from the Queenstown Rotary Club,is the District Grant Administrator and gave a very interesting address on both District and Global Grants. These are $1 for $1 allocations which effectively double the amount of money individual Clubs ( or groups of Clubs) can provide for projects.

Joan is very keen that Clubs take advantage of this funding and pointed out that this in fact belonged to the 9980 Clubs ( some $50,000pa) having been provided by Foundation dues . District Grants are for smaller scale , short term (up to 1 year)and applications ( form available on-line)are required to be in by 31 July each year .

The District Grants Committee makes every endeavour to support as many projects as possible, both by individual Clubs or by 2 or more Clubs working together . Global Grants are for larger scale ,longer term projects based overseas and typically involve more than 1 New Zealand based Rotary Club and a Club from the overseas location of the project.Applications for these grants can be made at any time. Joan gave an excellent talk simplifying a complex issue and was thanked by Deb Budden

Guest Speakers Bio July 24th - Jess Eastwood

We are very fortunate to have Jess Eastwood from Mindchat coming to help us think about our own health and wellness from every single angle. Jess is a Holistic Health and Mindset Coach from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, Health coach for the Ministry of Health, Personal Trainer through The Fit Collective, and mother of 2 beautiful little boys.

Most of her life has been spent listening, supporting, motivating and inspiring others.
She loved dealing with everyone else and their problems, as she could hide from her own until she suffered a life changing event that took a year to recover from.

Yes she had to face all of her demons. Her experience gave her a second chance to live life the way she really wanted to making her a better woman, mum, wife, friend, sister, daughter and find peace within herself.

Along the way she has built business, written books, travelled, held workshops and has recently developed an assortment of products and programs to help aid the challenges of life.

Jess says our minds over think so often! Causing unneccessary anxiety, stress, overwhelm, weight gain, weight loss, hormone issues, confusion, allergies, sensitivities and sleeplessness. She decided to 'mash up' everything she loved and her current business 'Mindchat' came from it!

Bring along partners and friends and prepare for a stimulating, thought provoking and fun evening.

DIRECTORS MEETING 18th July 2018 - Minutes to be in next weeks Bulletin.

Rotaract to Rotary Club President.

Hi, my name is Lisa and I am the President of the Rotary Club of Dunedin for the 2018/19 Rotary Year. I am married to Mike and we live on the Taieri with our daughter Annabelle (16 months) and dog, Lottie. I work at Deloitte here in Dunedin as a manager in the Tax & Private team. I was born and raised in Oamaru a whole 33 years ago, which by the way, is the location of next years conference (registrations are now open). I grew up there with my Mum, Dad and brother Michael. This is also where I met my husband – no we are not high school sweethearts, but we were high school friends.

When I look back on my life, I see many Rotary connections.
Dad was, and still is, a member of the Rotary Club of Oamaru (my first introduction to Rotary), while my brother has recently become a member of the same club (in fact, he is the President Nominee for the club).

When I finished school I came down to Dunedin where I studied at the University of Otago gaining a double degree in Law & Commerce, majoring in Accounting with Honours. John Burke, an ex-member of my current Rotary club who sadly passed away, was my dissertation supervisor and a great support to me in gaining my Honours degree. I really loved my time in Dunedin and made some really good connections while I was here through Rotary. It started with Dad’s club sponsoring me to attend RYLA in 2005 where I was inspired and met some amazing like-minded people, some of who I am still very close too. One was a candidate who my current club sponsored and I consider one of my closest friends. We meet most weeks for a coffee date with our wee girls. Another married a girl who he met at Rotaract and I was lucky enough to be part of the groom’s party as a groom’s girl. Another is part of a group of ex-Rotaractors who all still live in Dunedin and meet for brunch most months. The four of us plus other ex-RYE students, including the new AG for Central, Nick Wood and Brian Daniels (another fellow Rotarians) daughter, were all inspired by our experiences with Rotary via RYE and RYLA, started to meet regularly, with the idea of restarting a Rotaract Club. That club did get restarted and I was lucky enough to be president for the first two terms.

What I loved about our Rotaract Club was the can-do attitude and positive vibes thrown into every project. We were predominantly students with no money and a lot of time so we really enjoyed the hands-on projects. We were also really good at collaborating with other organisations (our sponsoring Rotary Clubs in particular), which enabled us to get involved in more. The years I had in Rotaract were some of my favourite and the connection I had with the local Rotary Clubs is what led me to eventually join my club when I felt I had outgrown Rotaract somewhat.

We all belong to this amazing organisation called Rotary. One of the things that makes our clubs great is the people but another is the things we do. Did you know that Rotary here in New Zealand is the driving force behind the formation of a number of well-known organisations such as CCS, National Kidney Foundation, Riding for the Disabled, Outward Bound, Ronald McDonald House Auckland and Cure Kids. As Rotarians we may be ordinary people but with a good idea and the belief that we can do more, together we can do extraordinary things, change lives, and be the inspiration
