To celebrate 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand, we’ve teamed up with UNICEF to give life-saving vaccines to 100,000 children across the Pacific.
So we’re well into March and it’s a bit wet this morning. I bet you farmers & gardeners love it.
Last week we welcomed Marie Fitchett to our club, pls say hi to Marie and make her joining our club a friendly occasion.
With three new members (Jenny, Di & Marie) in as many months our membership is bucking the trend. Excellent work.
That being said I am still very concerned in the future of our club. Last weekend was District 9999 President Elect Training and for the first time since I’ve been a member, Wanaka did not send a PE. So please ask yourself this question. “Should I, could I, will I be the next President” My term finishes in a little under 4 months, then what happens?
Anyway on a lighter note you will be happy to know Martin from the Bullock Bar has purchased a microphone. Yay I can hear all you deaf people saying
As always I hope this finds you all well.

Follow-up to the Te Kakano visit courtesy of Secretary Alan
Please find attached a photo of Kris Vollebregt from Te Kakano Aotearoa Trust, and me , uplifting some tools yesterday, ones that have been repaired/refurbished at the Wanaka Community Workshop (RCW).
While the work was done at the Community Workshop using their equipment and materials, the two mattock handles were supplied (funded, only $99.96) by the Rotary Club of Wanaka.
This work was undertaken following a recent visit by the RCW to Te Kakano's nursery, where the need for the repairs was noted.
A key reason for the RCW visit toTe Kakano's nursery was to see what had been achieved there with the help of a RCWCT $4000 donation made late last year. This donation was made to help Te Kakano expand their plant propagation facilities.
Guest Speakers over the past 2 weeks
Guest Speaker 22nd February. Kevin Mulqueen
Kevin gave a very informative presentation outlining how he left school in Alexandra, aged 16 years, starting as a joinery apprentice and has been in construction ever since. (40 years). Kelvin and his wife Fiona came to Wanaka in 1999 and it was around that time he began working for Breen’s.
Breen now has branches throughout the lower South Island including the MacKenzie Country. They employ around 220 staff and is a very “family orientated” business.
During his presentation Kevin displayed photographs of the many fine buildings the company has built in the Wanaka area. The company not only builds commercial buildings, they also build private homes, carry out a great deal of work for Wineries in the area, and a significant part of their business is farm infrastructure.
They are currently involved in the strengthening project at the Lake Hawea dam, a very soon will begin work on the Wanaka Lakes Coastguards building at Eely Point.
Kevin has just been promoted to a new position with the company, Central Region Manager. Ross who also joined our meeting is to take over Kelvin’s current position as Area Manager.
Thanks to Dave Evans for this summary of Kevin's presentation.

Guest Speaker 1st March: Rotary Member Eion Rutherford
It is well know that prior to March 2020 Eion and Liza Rutherford have been exploring parts of the world not touched by the normal tourist routes. They have a campervan permanently offshore with which they have been traversing the globe.
Using photographs, Eion took us through a trip they did a few years back with friends in convoy which started in Europe. They then followed broadly the Silk road through Ukriane (Flat), the "Stans", into and around China then back through Mongolia , Russia and back to Europe.
There were many interesting tales of culture, campervan maintenance and challenges along the way.
Thank you for sharing this Eion and Liza. It certainly beats sitting beside a pool with a Margarita in hand at a 5 star hotel. Can we assume there will be a Pacific Highway talk in the future to compliment this?

NZ House and Garden Tours : Wanaka
Please note this event has now been cancelled for 2022 due to covid.
The team at NRG In Invercargill often see Rotary Wine fundraisers, then we came up with the idea! Why not have a beer fundraiser!!
We have approached a brewery in Dunedin who has been hit hard by Covid-19 and we would like to introduce craft beers to many of our district’s members.
We are currently expecting a slab (12 x 440ml cans) to cost $100 with the profits going towards Give Every Child a Future. A worthwhile charity giving children in developing nations across the pacific vaccinations to preventable disease.
Please advertise this is your club bulletin-meetings etc and get in touch with us at nrginvercargill@gmail.com if you are interested.
