Presidents Report  17th October 2022
Just been on another car run this weekend – we went as far as Cromwell!!! Organised by some of the Dunedin-ites in the Jag Club, we learned all about McNulty House, McNulty Transport, Bendigo gold mining, and so on.

The majority of participants went to the racing at Highlands on Saturday afternoon, but Liz and I went and chilled out at a winery in  Bannockburn for an hour – a glass of wine overlooking the river – and a very noisy  Californian quail!!

Lunch on Sunday was to hear one Ian Callum talking about his time as a car designer with Jaguar and Aston Martin – a very interesting speaker who did not try and confuse with technical jargon, but rather just spoke as it was for him during his working life.

It turned out he came from Dumfries – my county town in Scotland – and spent a lot of
time in Edinburgh – Liz’ pied a terre.

We have a busy Rotary schedule over the next few weeks – ticket sales for the Duck Race leading up to the race itself on the 12th November, so watch for the volunteer list from MJ for the big day!!

The Melbourne Cup get-together is at B.Social on Tuesday 1st November – 4.30 pm with prize for the best-dressed, as well as the sweep for the race itself. (Let Marie know if you can be there.)

Committee night on the 8th , and (hopefully) back to Columbus Café on the 15th – Dev leaves about then so we don’t know who the manager will be from then on.

The first week in December is a busy week – 6th is the AGM, 10th is the Christmas Party, and the 13th is the Auction night. However, once this is all over, you can relax until the New Year when the book sale will be on.

Our Forum last week was fairly muted, but with good feedback for Directors to absorb. It was a comment from Chris Wright that took me somewhat by surprise: If the relatively minor subjects being talked about were all that were worrying club members, then the club
is in good heart!!! Thanks Chris.

I intend taking the Big Duck on walkabout next week – to park outside some of the primary schools at 3pm and try and get the little darlings to convince their parents to buy tickets for the Duck Race. Please feel free to come and help if you can – just let me know and I will tell you where I will be parked.

Enough for now.

President Mike.

Please Note: The Wanaka Rotary AGM is on the 6th December at the Columbus CafĂ© at 6.30pm.

George Scott - Coordinator of the Winter Crop Auction Fundraiser gets to hand over the money

It was with pleasure that George was able to over a cheque for $39,000.00 to the Otago Rescue helicopter Trust as a major part of the Winter Crop fundraising proceeds.

George and President Mike have since been scoping the possibility of assisting the new Wanaka Birthing Unit in building a helicopter pad from future fundraising efforts.

On behalf of our Club, great work George.

Hanna Walker - Winner of the National Real Estate Industry Award.

Rotary member Hannah shared with the Club her success in winning this nationwide award. Representing Proppy.co.nz, Hannah highlighted their success in using technology to move to a 100% online platform.

Congratulations Hannah

Upper Clutha Children's Medical Trust

At our Tuesday catch-up meeting on October 18th, Rotary member Dave Evans who is also Chairperson of the Upper Clutha Children's Medical Trust together with Trustee Diana McLachlan  gave an overview of the Trust's current activities.

The Trust is a vital part of the local community supporting all families with medical issues and we thank Dave and Diana for outlining the work this Trust does in our community.

 Three Minute Speakers.

Our Club has recently introduced the concept of a club-member speaking for  three minutes on a topic of their choice.
First up was Director Julian Warren who spoke on a role he took on at Cardrona Skifield this year on assisting skiers with disabilities.

Julian brought along and introduced Thomas Coysh who he has been assisting this year.

The Gibbston Valley Concert is scheduled for Saturday, 11 February 2023.

With assistance from the Aspiring Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Wanaka has once again agreed to provide the labour to staff the two main entrance gates at the Gibbston Valley Concert on Saturday, 11 February 2023. Some of us may also be asked to assist in some other areas e.g. monitoring of drink water tanks, hat sales, handing out giveaways, rubbish bags etc.

An opportunity to party or simply chill out and relax with friends and family, whilst enjoying listening to some old musical favourites!  All AFTER a stint helping to raise funds for our local Rotary Clubs, with all funds going to local community groups.

We will be supplied with scanners to scan people's tickets as they enter, so the task is a relatively simple one. We just need to ensure that we have enough people on hand on the day! Security staff will be in attendance checking bags etc.  Event management will be on hand to troubleshoot.

Everyone who volunteers, will be provided with a free pass to the concert (value $159).

In addition to the above, the Rotary Club of Wanaka  has been given the opportunity to collect donations from the Cromwell car park. This will be the first time we have collected from this car park, but we can expect a reasonably good collection here for just a few hours of effort.

In previous years, most people have been able to be released from the gates at around 1.00 - 1.30pm. All helpers are usually released by 2.30pm. The carpark collection is from 8.30am to whenever, but usually, it is wound up by 1.30pm.

People will be able to have short breaks during their shifts, and you can bring in outside food and non-alcoholic drinks. No outside alcohol is permitted.

Everyone helping on the day with ticketing at the entrance gates will be required to attend an on-site briefing at 8.00am, with the gates manned from 8.30am.

The main performing acts for the concert are:

ZZ Top
Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo
Stone Temple Pilots
The Angels

After the cancellation of last year's concert, this will be the 11th year of this concert series and it is expected to be a great concert for people to enjoy and relax. It also provides both the Rotary Club of Wanaka and the Aspiring Rotary Club with a significant fundraising opportunity. If you/your family/friends are interested in helping, please express your interest to John Huddleston and diary the date.  There is a limit on the number of passes available, so, reserve yours now!

A Note on the Family Support Programme

I believe your organisation is aware of the Community Networks/LINK Family Support Programme, a volunteer-based service supporting local families in the Upper Clutha. The first round of the service has gone really well and we are now looking for more volunteers to help our young families with companionship and household tasks. The commitment is two hours a week and we match volunteers with a family for a minimum of six weeks, so that a trusting and mutually beneficial relationship can be established.

We would be very grateful if you would please share the attached flyer, or the linked job description, within your networks and ask anyone interested to please get in touch with me.

Thanks so much,

Joanna
