Presidents Report  17th October 2022

The need for a fortnightly report is something that requires thought – but what if thought deserts one?? Despite the fact that, as President, I am bombarded with emails of all manner of Rotary goings-on - and I can sometimes feel my eyes and brain glazing over as I attempt to sift out the more important from the chaff - there is often a dearth of useful starting points for my report.

Or, rather than outside comments to spur me on, perhaps a break-down of all the things happening in the Rotary Club of Wanaka – Tititea, Crate Party, Book Sale, Duck Race, Scholarships, Alps to Ocean bike ride, financial applications, speakers, Columbus Café deadlines, wood sales, Christmas Party, AGM, DG visit, et al.

But, in all fairness, the greater majority of these are covered elsewhere in our Bulletin or at the weekly meetings by the relevant Directors, so please catch up with the ones that interest you most, a lot of which are on the left-hand side of the bulletin pages – including Birthdays, by the way!!!

It has been said before, but bears repeating, that the Club is only as good as the volunteers who do the different jobs, so if there is a call for help, please give of your time if at all possible. I think there are about 15 going to Tititea, for example, which will make for a
really good couple of days and should see a lot of work and tidying-up done, besides the socialising that goes on – well done all those who have put their hands up.

I know that some have difficulty in putting in apologies on the link in the Bulletin – I am not sure if this is a problem with the means of contact – type of mobile phone, for example – but please let me know if there is an issue for any of you and I can help put in the correct information. I looked at the list of apologies for this week and there were two with the wrong date. Both errors were month/day/year, which meant they were apologising for April the 10th  this year. Our system requires the date of absence to be day/month/year. I was able to sort these in time to avoid someone being billed for a meal they did not get!!

You should all have had the notice regarding the subs for this year – which have increased to $260 if paid before the end of October, or $280 after that. Any rise in costs is regretted, but needs as needs must, and we have to pay for a lot of things – the report to the Club by Paul Checketts would have made that clear, I think. So, to get the best bang for your buck, please pay by the end of this month.

There will be one or two small changes to what goes on at a weekly meeting – buying the microphone for example – and I am seriously thinking that I will be calling on a Director every so often to write this fortnightly column – good experience for them and a direct report of what they are doing in their Committee.

In the meantime, lovely weather, although snow forecast again later in the week – oh joy!!!

If I appear to be slightly one-eyed about things this week it may be because I have to get a small cataract taken out of my right eye on Thursday morning – baking and cups of tea gratefully accepted, thanks!!!

‘Till next time.

President Mike.

Guest speaker Bio : Tuesday October 4th. Grant Stewart
I’m a former RNZAF Engineer and a current commercial pilot who works for HeliSuppoprt NZ and Helisupport International (Antarctica) at the Wanaka airport holding  the CAA Senior Nominated Roles of Safety Manager and Occurrence Investigator.
In 2016 I had a squamous cell carcinoma in my neck which is where my cancer journey began. With my combined love of motorcycles and my cancer journey I thought that I would give something back so I registered for the Southern Scooter Challenge- 220 kms from Bluff to Queenstown on a 50cc scooter- to recognise men’s health particularly prostate cancer. I have now partaken in this event three times.
I am now cancer free, have a clean bill of health and exercise my commercial pilots licence under a class 1 medical.
Hope this is ok…

Guest Speaker Tuesday 27th September : Chloe Upton

Chloe Upton on 27th talked to us about the importance of good health and general fitness.

We live in complex times, but more is now known about our health and mental wellbeing.

We suffer from a number of 'lifestyle diseases' e.g heart disease, diabetes, depression, poor sleep and fatigue. If we can change some of our habits, this can improve our life.

Chloe talked about why a good diet is very important. More 'natural foods', simple and local, and reduce consumption of processed foods and those foods high in sugar.

Also, it is important that we move frequently, lift heavy things and sprint occasionally!

Lastly, Chloe explained the importance of having good relationships, a good night's sleep (7-8 hours), and slowing down, finding that quiet time by yourself to enable you to recharge, having fun play time and finding opportunities to use your brain!

All these things are relatively simple, but not always easy given our busy lifestyles.

Guest Speakers: Tuesday 20th September

Paul Checketts and Joan Kiernan
District 9999 Finance Chairperson and District Foundation Chairperson

Paul provided an overview of how our Club subs are determined, with the bulk made up of Rotary International (RI) and District levies. The Rotary Downunder subscription and GST provide the balance (see slide 1).

The RI levy breakdown is shown in slide 2, while slide 3 provides the District levy breakdown.

Joan reminded us of the Rotary Club Constitution:
  • purse the objects of Rotary
  • carry out successful service projects based on the 5 avenues of service
  • contribute to the advancement of Rotary by strengthening membership
  • support the Rotary Foundation
  • develop leaders beyond the Club level
The Rotary Foundation has USD$1.4 Bn in assets and in the last year provided $384m in program giving.

The source of income for the Foundation is from the income of existing capital and membership contributions.

Slide 4 provides an overview of Foundation Funding.

The programmes of the Rotary Foundation are:
  • Polio Plus
  • Grants - district, global and programs of scale.
  • Peace Fellowships
District Grants are available for both local and international projects. Our District received NZ$74,000 for the 2022/23 year, representing over 20 projects. Examples included a foodbank chiller in Invercargill, an EV battery storage area for a Nelson foodbank, literacy packs in Southland, playground equipment in Cashmere, a water supply system in Nepal and assistance for a preschool in Vanuatu.

Letter from Priya White. Wanaka Rotary assisted with funding in 2021
Dear Alan and Rod,

As it has been nearly a year since I received funding from Rotary I wanted to write and say thanks, as well as give you an update on my dance activity over the last twelve months.

I have continued to grow my love of dance and have remained focused on classical ballet as my main passion, with weekly lessons in contemporary as well.

This year, in addition to taking lessons at my current grade in ballet, I am also taking two additional classes in the levels above to increase my time in the studio and to improve my technique and strength. I also regularly go to the studio to practice in the school holidays or in the build up to competitions.

Through Pointe Central, our local Wanaka ballet studio, we were lucky enough to perform alongside the New Zealand Youth ballet and take a class with ex Royal New Zealand ballet principal Abigail Boyle. This was a great opportunity to dance with pre professional dancers and perform locally which was really fun.

I still enjoy going to competitions and during the last 12 months attended two in Alexandra and one in Mosgiel. I have enjoyed performing three classical ballet solos, a lyrical and contemporary, each time placing 1st - 3rd, with the exception of a new lyrical dance where I received very highly commended. I was also really pleased to receive a special award for potential in ballet.

Outside of competitions I was able to attend the New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD) summer intensive workshop in Wellington, five days of dance at the national school with dancers from around New Zealand and taught by some of the most experienced teachers in the country.

I auditioned to become an associate at the NZSD, but there was a huge amount of competition and this time was unsuccessful, so I auditioned to join the National Coaching Programme at the Anneliese Gilberd Academy in Christchurch and was so happy to be accepted.

This programme means I travel to Christchurch twice a term to join other dancers from around the country for a day. Next year I have been invited to return to a more senior level which I am really looking forward to.

Your funds have enabled me to go to Wellington as well as helping cover the costs of my competition fees.

I've continued to sell my homemade body scrub and in April stopped my paper round to take up a job at New World where I work stacking shelves. I put half of my earnings into my dance funds which along with the money from you, has enabled me to contribute to my dance costs.

My parents continue to cover the cost of the majority of my dance lessons, along with my dance shoes, competition outfits and my Granny has been generous enough to help with some of the Christchurch costs.

As you can see I'm still really passionate about ballet and am very grateful for all your support. As I start to think about next year, I wondered if you'd be happy to accept another application from me to help cover costs of the week-long intensive workshops.
Thanks again and look forward to hearing from you.
Priya

The Gibbston Valley Concert is scheduled for Saturday, 11 February 2023.

With assistance from the Aspiring Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Wanaka has once again agreed to provide the labour to staff the two main entrance gates at the Gibbston Valley Concert on Saturday, 11 February 2023. Some of us may also be asked to assist in some other areas e.g. monitoring of drink water tanks, hat sales, handing out giveaways, rubbish bags etc.

An opportunity to party or simply chill out and relax with friends and family, whilst enjoying listening to some old musical favourites!  All AFTER a stint helping to raise funds for our local Rotary Clubs, with all funds going to local community groups.

We will be supplied with scanners to scan people's tickets as they enter, so the task is a relatively simple one. We just need to ensure that we have enough people on hand on the day! Security staff will be in attendance checking bags etc.  Event management will be on hand to troubleshoot.

Everyone who volunteers, will be provided with a free pass to the concert (value $159).

In addition to the above, the Rotary Club of Wanaka  has been given the opportunity to collect donations from the Cromwell car park. This will be the first time we have collected from this car park, but we can expect a reasonably good collection here for just a few hours of effort.

In previous years, most people have been able to be released from the gates at around 1.00 - 1.30pm. All helpers are usually released by 2.30pm. The carpark collection is from 8.30am to whenever, but usually, it is wound up by 1.30pm.

People will be able to have short breaks during their shifts, and you can bring in outside food and non-alcoholic drinks. No outside alcohol is permitted.

Everyone helping on the day with ticketing at the entrance gates will be required to attend an on-site briefing at 8.00am, with the gates manned from 8.30am.

The main performing acts for the concert are:

ZZ Top
Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo
Stone Temple Pilots
The Angels

After the cancellation of last year's concert, this will be the 11th year of this concert series and it is expected to be a great concert for people to enjoy and relax. It also provides both the Rotary Club of Wanaka and the Aspiring Rotary Club with a significant fundraising opportunity. If you/your family/friends are interested in helping, please express your interest to John Huddleston and diary the date.  There is a limit on the number of passes available, so, reserve yours now!

A Note on the Family Support Programme

I believe your organisation is aware of the Community Networks/LINK Family Support Programme, a volunteer-based service supporting local families in the Upper Clutha. The first round of the service has gone really well and we are now looking for more volunteers to help our young families with companionship and household tasks. The commitment is two hours a week and we match volunteers with a family for a minimum of six weeks, so that a trusting and mutually beneficial relationship can be established.

We would be very grateful if you would please share the attached flyer, or the linked job description, within your networks and ask anyone interested to please get in touch with me.

Thanks so much,

Joanna
