Presidents Report  14th November 2022

My input to the fortnightly report is going to be minimal this time – not because I have nothing to say, but rather it is more important that you all read what someone else has to say.

I was forwarded the email below by Jonathan and it is important that all of you see it  and understand, like me, that what we do can have momentous and totally satisfying implications.

In the meantime, keep an eye on what is going on- a lot! – and be involved where you can.

President Mike

Dear Rotary Club of Wanaka,

My name is Bella Sarginson and you have significantly impacted my life and future.

This year I applied for a few scholarships that run through Mount Aspiring College as I have just finished my last year of high school and will be off to University next year. When putting my application in, I was fortunate enough to have been selected as one of the six students to gain an interview for the Rotary Club Scholarship, for which, I was so very thankful. Honestly, being selected for an interview was so heartwarming and an accomplishment for me, but to then be the recipient of the scholarship. Just wow.

I just wanted to write this letter to the club to express my gratitude as I am so very grateful for the opportunity that you have given me because it is going to make such a positive impact on my tertiary education and the fees that I face. I come from a single-parent household (as stated in my interview) so we have always been a bit money restricted.

You may know my mother, Bex Sarginson, who runs Food for Love here in Wanaka. She helps and supports those in the community every day who face struggles that are not recognised within our society. She has been my influence in wanting to help people and families in the future, hence, why I wish to study psychology and social work. Being gifted this money will not only help get me through to the end of my degree but also give me the opportunity to follow in my mother's footsteps.

I may not have looked very happy on stage when I was presented the award, however, I was actually trying to hold back happy tears. Any money that is gifted to me to help me in my future years is something that I
will never take for granted and will appreciate because I can understand that it is coming from a good place and is something that should be valued. I don’t know how I can express my gratitude enough to the club because just thank you, thank you, thank you! THANK YOU.

I hope all goes well for the rest of the year for you all, and that you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Hey, here’s one last big thank you haha - I really appreciate it all.

Kind Regards,
Bella Sarginson.

Fundraising Activities
The Annual Wanaka Rotary Duck Race
Our Annual Race due to be raced on Saturday 12th November had to be postponed due to high lake levels (below) however we expect that the race will be "good to go" this coming Saturday 19th.

Meanwhile the Best Dressed Corporate Duck judging was held at 3 Parks Mitre 10 MEGA on late Friday afternoon. Geoff, Geoff and President Mike were in attendance.

The Judges (photo 2)were President Mike and to Mike's left; Rowena, Millie and Gina from Mitre 10 MEGA. Rowena is holding the winning Duck from Backbone, a last minute entry which stole the show. Millie is holding the 2nd placed duck from Pukka, and Gina the 3rd placed duck from Kai Whakapai.

Congratulations to the winners and all entrants. It was evident a great deal of artistic genius went into this years entries.

In anticipation of the magnificent World Cup winning Black Ferns,  the middle duck, back row in photo 4 was accorded the name of "Ruby Tui".

The Gibbston Valley Concert is scheduled for Saturday, 11 February 2023.

With assistance from the Aspiring Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Wanaka has once again agreed to provide the labour to staff the two main entrance gates at the Gibbston Valley Concert on Saturday, 11 February 2023. Some of us may also be asked to assist in some other areas e.g. monitoring of drink water tanks, hat sales, handing out giveaways, rubbish bags etc.

An opportunity to party or simply chill out and relax with friends and family, whilst enjoying listening to some old musical favourites!  All AFTER a stint helping to raise funds for our local Rotary Clubs, with all funds going to local community groups.

We will be supplied with scanners to scan people's tickets as they enter, so the task is a relatively simple one. We just need to ensure that we have enough people on hand on the day! Security staff will be in attendance checking bags etc.  Event management will be on hand to troubleshoot.

Everyone who volunteers, will be provided with a free pass to the concert (value $159).

In addition to the above, the Rotary Club of Wanaka  has been given the opportunity to collect donations from the Cromwell car park. This will be the first time we have collected from this car park, but we can expect a reasonably good collection here for just a few hours of effort.

In previous years, most people have been able to be released from the gates at around 1.00 - 1.30pm. All helpers are usually released by 2.30pm. The carpark collection is from 8.30am to whenever, but usually, it is wound up by 1.30pm.

People will be able to have short breaks during their shifts, and you can bring in outside food and non-alcoholic drinks. No outside alcohol is permitted.

Everyone helping on the day with ticketing at the entrance gates will be required to attend an on-site briefing at 8.00am, with the gates manned from 8.30am.

The main performing acts for the concert are:

ZZ Top
Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo
Stone Temple Pilots
The Angels

After the cancellation of last year's concert, this will be the 11th year of this concert series and it is expected to be a great concert for people to enjoy and relax. It also provides both the Rotary Club of Wanaka and the Aspiring Rotary Club with a significant fundraising opportunity. If you/your family/friends are interested in helping, please express your interest to John Huddleston and diary the date.  There is a limit on the number of passes available, so, reserve yours now!

Melbourne Cup afternoon
Rotary punters of many attired types met at "B Social" to celebrate and enjoy this year's running of the Melbourne Cup.  The anticipated rain never arrived (Mr Boswell), so the more gaily dressed punters took out the best dressed prizes.

One of the ticket holders of the winning horse was so canny he got his wife to accept the prize.

Our thanks go to Chris Wright for arranging the afternoon, Kenny from "The Village Gift", and Mein Host Matt Laming from B Social.

A Note on the Family Support Programme

I believe your organisation is aware of the Community Networks/LINK Family Support Programme, a volunteer-based service supporting local families in the Upper Clutha. The first round of the service has gone really well and we are now looking for more volunteers to help our young families with companionship and household tasks. The commitment is two hours a week and we match volunteers with a family for a minimum of six weeks, so that a trusting and mutually beneficial relationship can be established.

We would be very grateful if you would please share the attached flyer, or the linked job description, within your networks and ask anyone interested to please get in touch with me.

Thanks so much,

Joanna
