The Upper Clutha Childrens Medical Trust (check it out on www.uccmedtrust.co.nz and see exactly what we do) is holding a quiz night at the Wanaka Golf Clubhouse at 7 pm on Friday the 13th April 2018.

We are looking for teams of 6 - 8 people with the cost of entry being $15 per person.  You are guaranteed heaps of fun with quiz master George Smyth.  There is a cash bar, supper and outstanding raffle, spot prizes and just 1 auction of an outstanding flight package around Mount Cook.

It would be great if Rotary could put together some teams and come along and support such a great cause.

In brief

WOW - it was hard work with long days, but a lot of fun! A handful of US Rotarians popped into the tent and said ‘ hello, what a great job being done…..! Also Lisa Bishop, the Governor from District 7090, Delhi Club Ontario and a pilot, stopped by a couple of times. The BIG Rotary flag was like a beacon! Anyway, after closing it was evident that sales had been exceptional! Well done Rotarians , partners and friends who helped out.

David Allard Guest Speaker Report

We were royally informed and entertained when David Allard a pilot spoke to us last Tuesday about why we rarely get diverted to Invercargil anymore when we have bad weather in Queenstown.

David is from Auckland and a member of the Devonport Rotary Club and has been a part time resident of Wanaka for the last 14 years spending time between both destinations and work. David started out his working life as a computer programmer then he became a pilot spending the next 40+ years flying mostly for Air NZ. He has piloted the B737, DC10, B747. Then as fleet Manager introduced the B777ito Air NZ’s operation culminating in being chosen to fly it at Warbirds over Wanaka and was also flight instructor and airline examiner on all the aircraft flown. He currently works as a part time B787 flight simulator instructor and examiner.

What he explained in simple layman’s terms was the change in the navigation technology which allows an aircraft to fly in all weather into Queenstown on autopilot. Like most Wanaka people who while driving over the crown range have seen the Air NZ planes flying up the Gibston Valley and been fascinated about how they are able to do that safely. Also when flying into Queenstown in cloud and knowing how close the mountains are on either side in the approach and wondering about the skill of the pilots. We all left satisfied that we as passengers and the airline and company are in safe hands with the technology available at Queenstown airport.

In ending his presentation he showed a U tube clip of an aircraft flying into Queenstown in cloud and approaching the runway from the lake which was all to real in bringing home the speed which these things happen and what the pilot might feel going into and out of cloud. This was a most informative and enjoyable speech which we all enjoyed judging by the questions and applause.

WOW

Over 45 Rotarians, partners, friends and family along with MAC students helped make the WOW volunteering weekend a great fundraising success! From shifting boxes and setting out merchandise to sales crew coming and going all weekend in a very timely manner everything worked extremely well!

We were on a fast learning curve with the Casio cash registers in both merchandise marquees on Friday morning but it didn’t take too long to get the eftpos and till ringing and clicking away. By Saturday afternoon we had run out of 2018 caps – which everyone wanted of course. But out came the old stock from 2016 adding new enthusiasm to customers and the sales team!

By Sunday clothing sizes were getting thin on the ground, especially grey t-shirts, but $10 specials from 2014 were quickly being picked up as they too featured a plane front and back. Mid Sunday the small marquee was running low on stock so it was closed down and remaining stock moved to the large marquee. Final act of the day was the stock take and the few remaining volunteers were able to rapidly box and number the last of the merchandise.

A lot of work goes on to get our event up and running and not one thing would happen if it wasn’t for the real commitment from our volunteers. A major thank you to everyone for their commitment, time and energy over this holiday weekend.
