Tuesday 29th August - President Fran's Message:

Where has the week gone!  Spring is on the way, heaven forbid!  I saw a few Rotarians in Mitre 10 looking at the new season seedlings. It’s great to support Mitre 10 who has allowed the WRC to use the entranceway as the Collection Depot for our Book Sale.

Deadline for Apologies, is Monday 8pm.

Howard Smith, Honorary Member and Past President of the Rotary Club of Wanaka, passed away last week in Christchurch. Our condolences have been conveyed with a card sent to Maureen last Friday.

Coming  up  The Artisan Wine & Cheese evening has a great team going to support the Rotary Clubs of Cromwell and Alexandra , 2nd September in Cromwell. Come and support the Rotary function and enjoy the evening. Tickets are available from Tabatha. Don't forget that transport will be available, based on numbers for a nominal cost.

Tititea Lodge work weekend coming up 16& 17 September, the Duck Race,  21st October and Book Sale 10,11,12 November. The PR team will be upping the anti with regard to advertising our major fundraisers, but don't forget that ‘word of mouth’ works brilliantly.

Thanks to our Sponsors & Supporters for their long term generosity without which we would be unable to hold these fundraising & service projects.

Upper Clutha Transport – provide storage for WRC & support for the Wheels to Dunstan, Stonewood Homes, Harcourts Real Estate, Radcliffe Electrical, Print It , Harraways, Glandovey, Wanaka Storage Solutions, Mitre 10
Grant Parker, Guy Alty, Jarrod Frazer, Latin Link Adventure, Redpaths, Condon Scott, Wanaka App, NZ Hearing & The Farm Wanaka.

Nga mihi

GUEST SPEAKER UPDATE 22 AUGUST 2017

Duncan commenced his memorable talk by displaying a 1950’s map of Europe

And then advised that he was actually going to talk about the events leading up to the Gallipoli disaster and the service of his father through WW1.

Readers would have had to have been there to experience the school masterly presentation and the writer suggests if you weren’t there and wish to catch up with the history you click here and there.

Duncan’s father after being stationed initially in Egypt was part of the invasion at Gallipoli. He survived and went on to serve in Normandy. (Those of you are following this can figure that Duncan was born after the end of WW1 (but that’s another story)). The landscape of Gallipoli was compared to that of Mt Iron with the sea being up to the main road. Duncan was able to attend the 100 year anniversary memorial and get a first-hand understanding of the size of the area in which 3,500 New Zealanders and 15,000 Australians landed in; less than a sports stadium! The Dardanelles only being about the width of Roy’s Bay.

Duncan related his dis-satisfaction of the process associated with the selection of New Zealanders to attend the memorial. After being declined a position he and his son were able to successfully mount a campaign to get there. But once there Duncan felt that others who were there were generally political favourites. On his return he partitioned the ombudsman and was very disturbed to receive a mostly redacted report from the defence department about the process.  He made a few comments about politics that went along the lines of _____ and _____ are __ ___ the ______

Altogether a very interesting talk and no one needed to receive the threatened chalk projectile for falling asleep.
