Tuesday 08 May 2018  - President Fran's Message:
A Busy Rotary Week - There was the visit from McDonald Adhikary and John Ealan talking about their Bangladeshi Orphanage project, the Induction of Colin Sharp and Tony Parker, Directors Meeting, planning the Membership Satisfaction Survey evening (tomorrow night) and discussion about the upcoming Conference in Dunedin PLUS just plain old everyday living!

District 9980 Conference in Dunedin
It was an exhausting weekend but one filled with a fantastic line-up of speakers, good food, a variety of beverages and good company.  A particularly moving speaker was Cam Calkoen, a cerebral palsy sufferer, but someone who has learned to live with his condition and consequently has a successful business, as an Inspirational Speaker.  There were a few moist eyes during his address! Dr Lance O’Sullivan also talked about his ‘journey’ to becoming a doctor and attributes his success to his mother, his country, many caring people and Rotary help. He is currently working on a project which involves Digital Health Aid, one that will ensure that medical response is quicker than at present, 8minutes as opposed to 2-3 days! He is confident his project will be a major change for the better, in healthcare, especially for Maori living in remote areas of New Zealand. Other notable speakers:  Robbie Francis, Kevin Biggar, Nicola Atwool, Martin Snedden talked about ‘Making a Difference’. The RYE Students were sensational ambassadors for Rotary Youth Exchange and the 3 Speech Competitors were equally impressive.  Dick Wilson, the Rotary International Representative for Ian Riseley, International Rotary President, relayed the message: Look after your Members, Look after your Community and Don’t spread yourselves too thin.  There was a lot to take in, but those of us who attended came away with a little ‘something’ to ponder!

FOR is a good way for interested parties to get to know how the Rotary Club works.

Bangladeshi Orphanage & International Needs Organisation
Guest Speakers: John Ealan & McDonald Adhikary

John and McDonald are both representatives of the International Aid Organisation known as “International Needs”.  John is from Tauranga and McDonald is from Bangladesh.  They outlined the nature of their organisation’s work in at least 34 countries around the world. John emphasized that International Needs goes to a great deal of effort to locate quality representatives from within the countries being helped to manage the projects. He told us that last year he spent 10 days in Bangladesh looking at projects they were sponsoring.  This included the Naogaon Project which is based in the very poor north west of Bangladesh.

McDonald went on to tell us about the progress of the project to build a drop-in education centre and associated orphanage.  He showed photographs of the build and said that one of the aims was to help get children out of the forced child labour market and into school. He told us that in Bangladesh alone there were 4.7 million children aged between 4 and 14 years being forced to work rather than go to school.

Both men thanked the club for the funds we donated 2 years ago towards the Naogaon Project and President Fran indicated that it may be possible for the club to make another donation in the future.
